Modern Manners

I posted a couple of ads on an Irish BMW forum for mags and some manuals. Someone contacted me to get the mags from me (theyre free). I put them in the car to give them to the guy on Monday as agreed. Did he bother to contact me to collect? No. Not even a text to say 'sorry cant collect'. To me this is bad manners. Needles to say, they will be going to someone else. Same story with one of the manuals I had for sale. Someone contacts to say he'll take it and nothing since.

It seems to me that most people nowadays don't know / care about wasting people's time. If I made an arrangement to meet someone to collect something and could't be there, I'd have the courtesy of informing them. Maybe I'm just old fashioned?

No Kevin, you're not old fashioned - just silly to expect common courtesy these days!

Neither parents nor schools teach manners currently - it's not politically correct!

You have my sympathy.

I am a firm believer in the adage " Manners Maketh Man", if I took anything from my parents that was it and I don't think it is old fashioned by be polite and courteous.

It raises you above the mannerless great unwashed who are just on this planet for what they can get...

This brings the term "some are more equal than others" to light

You may be old fashioned, but that certainly doesn't suggest that it is wrong! I can't stand the lack of manners that has swept through most of my generation... that said however, I find most people of all ages to be rude and ignorant. Bus drivers are my most recent pet peeve....

Bad manners is a pet hate of mine, and i make a point of bringing it to peoples attention.

If a shop keeper holds out their hand without giving me a price and saying please at the end, i hold them up by looking at the empty hand, or sometimes i shake it.

My daughter is 3 years old and she doesn't get ANYTHING unless she says please and thankyou, and she understands the correct time and place to use the word sorry.

If a grown adult can't do simple things like use manners, then they are simply ignorant.

Manners are getting to be rather less common these days i think

To give an example of how a lack of manners is now getting to be the norm - let me tell you about

the reaction i got when i displayed what i would call very basic manners.

A very kind and helpful lady helped me with a project i did for a training course a few years ago - i interviewed her as part of said project.

So about a week later i send her a letter to say thank you very much for her help - like i say very basic manners as far as im concerned.

A couple of weeks later i got a phone call - from herself to say thank you for sending her the letter - and i told her again that i really appreciated her help. She appearently was so thrilled to get the letter and that i went to the bother of sending her a thank you letter, her delight at recieving such basic courtesy (as i would see it) is indicative to me of the fact that common courtesy isn't actually so common.

I used to sell a lot of stuff on an auction site for Lindop Toyota, on a daily basis I would have people ring up ask to take something off auction because they desperatly needed an item, only for them to not turn up or ring with an excuse, also people would call and offer maybe only 10% of the asking price for something, why oh why would I accept that stupid offer? You get hardened to it in the end and you feel like ranting, but I turn these people on their heads and be over polite, it winds them up, tell them if only they phoned yesterday you had a whole load of that item free of charge

You must have great patience Kingo, dealing with people like that. I don't think I'd be in business for long, as I'd just give them a good telling off!

I have a good stock of parts for BMW E30s that I have gathered over the years. I had thought of selling the stuff to fellow E30 enthusiasts at reasonable prices. But after this, I think I'll just hold on to them and bin what I don't need in the future.
