Poor Ride

Have now been the proud owner of a new Prius T spirit for just over two weeks. Whilst, overall, well pleased with my purchase, I noticed, from when I picked up the car that particuarly at speeds below 45 mph, there was a noticeable judder from the rear wheels ( like a dampened version of driving with a flat rear tyre ). Being new to the vehicle and wishing to experience it over various road surfaces, I decided to give it a couple of weeks to see how things went. Alas, having notched up 600 miles in it and over various surfaces, I am now satisfied that there is a problem. I had a similar problem with a previous car and it was caused by the wheels being out of balance. Has anyone else experienced this problem with the Prius and any other possible causes? The car is booked in for the dealer to look at next week.

Nope - nice smooth ride in mine.

A visit to Mr T is called for I think!

Just a thought, check tyre pressures are correct. What you explain I have experienced on another make of car with over inflated pressures. If this is OK go to dealers to sort the problem out.

I would double check the pressures too. It appears that some of Mr T's dealers don't like to pump the tyres to the correct pressures as the Prius does run them a little higher than normal. The correct pressures are shown on the inside of the drivers door. If low by even 1 or 2 psi you will get poor running AND lower mpg's.

If this doesn't cure it then get the tyres balanced.

Let us know how you get on with the dealers.

I hope you get it sorted easily - not the kind of thing you expect to experience with a new car.

I was interested in your previous post about local dealers not being interested in doing a deal. I had a similar experience in the past and found that Brooklyn Worcester could offer a much better deal but sadly that has closed so I may well try the dealer you mentioned should I decide to buy a new Toyota in the future.

Best of luck with your Prius.

David

Our pressures were out as well when delivered. Ever since I've had a BMW I realised how sensitive some cars are to tyre pressures. The Prius T-Spirit does seem to be sensive to the correct pressure.

Could be many things really, tyre pressure as stated, or wheel out of balance, or wheel buckled/ damaged or simply that there is crud behind the wheel mating face and it's not actually sitting on the hub square.
