Am taking the Prius over to Jersey soon.

Does anyone know how much unleaded is over there at the moment?

In Guernsey just over £1.00. I think it is a bit dearer in Jersey, but everything is dearer there, so come to the better island instead. Still it is cheaper than the UK so leave your fill up till you get there and top up before you leave.

It will be interesting to see how little fuel I use while there.

Sorry to jump on, but I love the Channel islands - especially Guernsey. Have fond memories of my childhood spent there around Cobo Bay. I've been telling myself for years that I want to go back, but never got round to it.

Spent 6 years going to Jersey for holidays some years ago. There were 6 electric only Rav's running around over there at the time so I feel sure your Prius will show a marked improvement in consumption! Maximum speed on the island is 40 mph, electric only on the flat and going down hill, short hills going up so not much power used.... I would be surprised if you show less rhan 65 mog while you are there....

Reset trip b as you get off the cat and look at it just before you get back on coming home.... In fact i'd be surprised if you actually use more than a couple of gallons a week over there

We have been to Jersey (and Guernsey) many times and will be there again at the end of June.

I have never been persuaded of the value of taking a car. The roads are very narrow and parking is a pain.

Although the advertised overall limit is 40 m.p.h., many of the roads have lower limits of 30 or 20 m.p.h and on green lanes the max is 15 m.p.h.

On the other hand, the bus service is good and cheap and the island so small that many things are within easy walking of a bus stop.

I am always amazed at how many high performance vehicles are seen there. I guess it must be the bankers.

I am coming the other way with the Prius, for a month touring. When I came last September/October I found that although the headline price for fuel is very much higher in the UK, the actual cost per mile was within 100th of a penny the same as in Guernsey. Although we have an island wide speed limit of 35 mph and lower in quite a few areas we do not have the benefit of driving in a straight line for more than about 100 yds on the majority of roads. So consequently the gearing is effectively in a low range, hence higher consumption. When I have visited, in the days before I had the Prius, I was able to get my consumption down to half of that on the island. But with the fuel consumption of the Prius being almost a straight line between Urban and extra Urban one would expect the Prius to show less difference.

Owned the Prius for just over a year and in 10,000 miles here and in the UK I have averaged a true, not car computer, consumption of 56.3. By comparison my 2009 Avensis 2 litre petrol gave me a average of 34.8. So if in April and early May you see a white Gen 3 T Spirit with only digits on the registration plates then there is a good chance that it will be me. There are many genuine car enthusiasts in the island. We have Jenson Button and Andy Priaulx the World Touring car champion living in the island. Andy is a local lad. Very active motor sport scene. I was president of the local Motor and Motor Cycle Club. Entered in hillclimbs and motor cycle trials. Not all the the performance cars are owned by bankers, most are owned by intelligent people!

Hi j2d - it's great to hear from someone from Guernsey.

We first visited the island in 1956 (on honeymoon) and have been there almost every year since. I would be even less likely to take my car to Guernsey than to Jersey. We top up our bus card on arrival and hop on the bus whenever we need. It's a great deal. The cliff walks are superb and it's a delight not to need to drive.

Enjoy your UK trip.

I have done both in the past and the bus works well if you are based in St Helier but if staying out in the sticks a car is handy. The cost of going over on the ferry was pretty much the same as flying and there is virtually no weight limit on the luggage so we can take the kitchen sink

Interesting to find out the price of fuel in the Channel Islands.I live on the Isle of Man and because we have a Vat agreement with the Uk we have to follow a similar fuel duty senario as the UK, our price for a litre of diesel at the moment is £1.46. From what i gather Jersey as the GST tax 3% soon to be 5%, not sure about Guernsey. We like the Channel Islands are not members of the EU but boy do we have to pay for it in otherways with having this agreement with the UK.Our income tax rate is only 10%, I think it,s higher in the Channel Islands so I suppose that does compensate a little bit!!!!!

If you want really cheap fuel offshore the best place to buy is Gibralter 80p a litre back in November last yeat.

Regards Clare

Unlike the other island we in Guernsey do not have GST. However our price does reflect the fact that road tax was considered too expensive to administer and collect so it was discontinued and an additional levy was placed on petrol. The same happened when it was being considered that paid parking should be put in place, think how many millions could be saved for you poor UK taxpayers if those idiots in Westminster thought the same. One down side of no VED is that I get no taxation benefit from having a Prius. Before you start to think that the motorist is at a great advantage here you must bear in mind that for conventional cars the mileage per gallon is about half of that for the same car in the UK. Therefore it costs more to run the majority of cars here than in the UK. Our income tax is higher at 20p flat rate. Food and household expenditure is much higher than the UK. Yes we have no VAT but who lives on items on which VAT is charged.

I thought that the ferry companies advised against travelling with a fully topped up fuel tank

Lovely weather here. The most expensive petrol so far is 118.9 but a lot of garages don't display prices. Cheapest by far is motor mall on the a9 just outside st helier at 101.9 :) :) Average mpg so far is 66.6 but it is difficult to do long journeys so by the time the prius has warmed up, you have arrived. However, i did count 6 gen2 taxis in st helier.

You have to remember that in the islands the majority of fuel is sold to locals. They know where the best prices are or they are loyal to one outlet because of an old fashioned thing that still exists in the islands. It is called service. But I will admit that this is more so in Guernsey than in the other place.

I have a feeling that 'service' will come more to the forefront in the next few years, that will be the one thing that keeps customers coming back... with all the choice that we have at the moment there is nothing else to engender loyalty!

Topped up on the last day and unleaded had gone up to 105.4  Left me wondering what the prices were like back home. Averaged 61mpg while on Jersey (Fuelly figure).
