Yaris Sr - Possible Abs/braking Issue

Hi all

I'm finally back with another query about the wife's Yaris. It's a 2000 SR. She recently noticed an intermittent juddering sensation under braking, often at low speeds (she's not the fastest driver) which sounded like the ABS may be coming in. I've had a go in it today and only managed to replicate the issue once in a 7 mile journey and it DID feel like the ABS coming in, although it was at a much lower speed than I'd expect it to come in in my car but wasn't under particularly heavy braking. She had new brakes put on a at local garage on Wednesday so is feeling a bit gutted that she's out £100 and it's still happening.

Does anyone have experience of similar or any suggestions/advice.

Many thanks

Hi mate this is a strange fault, all I can suggest is that you check the ABS sensors and the rotors that they are reading for any build up crap on any of them. If there is a build up say on the rotor the sensor may not get a correct reading and think the wheel has stopped and so applies the ABS, also make sure the sensors are mounted securely and not damaged in any way and that includes the wiring and connectors.

Sorry I can't be of more help, if in doubt when it comes to safety .... take it to a decent garage..

Regards Pete.

At the risk of teaching a granny to suck eggs....

Have you double checked the tyre pressures are OK and also that there is good tread on the tyres?

If one of the tyres is bald or has very low or high tyre pressure compared to the others, then you will get a different level of grip on one corner that could cause the ABS to kick in on one wheel whilst the others are still braking happily.

I've even had "unbalanced" braking issues when I've had different brands of tyres on different corners, after buying a used car with a cheap crappy replacement tyre on one corner - because one tyre was then gripping harder on one side than another of a different brand on the other side - which is why I always keep the same type of tyres on all four wheels to make sure the handling and braking is balanced...

I also has a problem on our 2000 Yaris (without ABS) whereby for some reason, one side at the rear had very different braking levels to the other side at the rear. You could only tell if you braked from above 50mph, but if you did brake firmly at speed, it was enough to pull the car quite severely to one side so that it was difficult staying in a motorway lane. Ours did't have ABS, so I don't know what an ABS car would have done in those circumstances...

I stripped the rear brakes down (removed the shoes and disconnected the handbrake lever from the shoes) and reassembled them and all was fine.

Whether someone had assembled them wrongly previously, I'll never know - and I couldn't tell that anything wasn't fitteed correctly, but it went away after a remove and reinstall of the shoes...

And that was after changing both front disks and pads to try and cure the pulling, assuming that it ws the front brakes that were the cause....

I suspect that none of the above will help, but sharing the info just in case...

I've had a similar problem to this with a Rover I used to have and it turned out to be a faulty ABS sensor. The ABS used to kick in as if it detected a skid under braking at times and got the usual ABS vibration through the pedal. May not be but thought I'd mention it :)

Hope you get it sorted :)

Thanks all for the advice. We did check the tyre pressures and they were all spot on, they're also fairly new. The real annoying bit is that it's only happening intermittently so the garage couldn't find anything. Thanks again.
