Load Squeak From Brakes

Loud squeak not load as per my title

After I made a sudden stop at speed to avoid a pheasant running across the road my 2007 Prius has developed a loud squeak as I'm driving along, a light touch on the pedal stops it instantly and it returns a while after. I also notice that it often appears when going over rough road surfaces.

I just got home and touched all four disks and the only one hot was the drivers side front so I guess that's the one that's playing up. Sounds like the pads are not clearing the disk maybe? Vehicle has only covered 30'000 miles so I doubt the pads are worn. Anyone had similar?

Very common problem, mine started at about the same mileage. I also found that turning the car sharply to one side caused the sound.

Dealer sorted it our under warranty.

I have three friends all with the same problem and same action by the dealer.

Mine has exactly the same trouble. Dealer told me it needed a new wheel bearing! Clearly not that, so didn't authorise, but do the guys that got it fixed know what it was that caused it?

I don't suppose you know if they had to replace anything or if it was something more basic ?

if it's to do with the pads needing roughing up then I would do it myself rather than book it in as altho it's under a Toyota warranty it's a lot of hastle to arrange a courtesy car and all that if it's something simple I can do myself.

Looking on the net it seems a common complaint is the Prius brakes being noisy when applied but mines the opposite.

I bet the dealer just slapped some copper grease on the back of the pads and refitted them.

Will try the copper grease treatment, thanks. I was going to take off the weather-shield. Will let you know!

Don't quite see what the pheasant has to do with it? aren't they now out of season ? any way you seem to have missed it.

My similar experience as requested was with actually hitting a pheasant [no way would I swerve to avoid small animals, except dogs] was that it pushed my headlight back into the L/H wing.

The result was big bang !! - Mass of feathers ejected into the air - I stop to inspect damage to my car - My father [a retired butcher] as passenger had his own agenda and lept out to attend to the unfortunate bird - he made an executive decision on the spot and wrung it's neck.

It was processed and we had a very nice family dinner about a fortnight later [after the hanging, the bird that is].

OH!! to get back to the point, my 1958 Opel Olympia had drum brakes and were not effected. My headlamp was just sprung out of its aperture and I was able to just push it back home into it's steel wing.

Just thought I would mention it - hope it helps.

going to jack my wheel up later and check it turns freely, but just thought ... unless the power is on the transmission will lock so the wheel won't turn so not sure of the best option there as the engine will fire up presumably

Ready mode, select EV mode as soon as possible, select neutral?

Oh, and switch off the climate.

I guess you'll want a stable trolley jack just in case the engine does fire up.

Interesting. I have had this intermittent squeak for two years following dealer servicing. They have never been able to trace it! Now I have major brake warning light problem which they say is ECU.(£££!).Car has only done 40000.

Turns out the warning lights were due to a corroded wire on the loom. Toyota/main dealer eventuallly diagnosed and fixed at no cost although it took many hours and three weeks. Well done dealer and Toyota.

I think I found a cure, My 91 year old dad said that when they used to get brakes binding or squeaking they used to roll backwards down a hill and the hit the brake pedal, this disturbs the usual way the pads touch the disks and presumably relocates them in some way. Anyhow I pulled up near home with it squeaking on a hill with no traffic about and let it run backwards for a few yards & then stabbed the brakes.

Not had a squeak since then ( 70 miles mixed driving) and the disc remains at the same temperature as the others which is more or less cold so I'm keeping my fingers crossed

Squeal sorted! Tried Capnbirdseye's dad's cure (driving backwards and hitting the brakes) but although it made it less loud, it was still there. Trouble is, Prius limits how fast you can reverse. Anyway, slapped some copper grease on it like seamaster said! All quiet on the near side front!!
