Clutch Change

Hi,

A friend has asked if I could change the clutch in his 04-plate 2.0 vvti (AWD) Rav4, as I'm fairly handy with a set of spanners, and have a proper ramp to do the job on.

I've read various horror stories about this job though. Is it really such a nightmare?

If I take it on, is there anything else I should be doing at the same time? eg Changing/refurbishing the DMF (if it has one).

Cheers,

Iain

Hi

If its petrol its a solid flywheel. I have not done a clutch but if you need accurate technical information the best source of information is Toyota Technical publications site.

http://www.toyota-tech.eu/default.aspx

You have to register and they charge 3 Euro's per hour (plus VAT) but you have access to the official technical publications for your precise model and you can download the information as PDFs.

Here are some examples, I do not have all the removal documents

Clutch unit inspection.pdf

No DMF on a 2.0 vvti as it's a Petrol..... If it's anything like the Diesel RAV to change the clutch then it's a engine drop to get to it....

Normally drop the engine out the bottom although I've seen it done without the subframe and just leaning the engine over.

Thanks for the info (and pdfs ). I'll see what he wants to do...

Cheers,

Iain

The book price for changing a clutch is around £1200 - £1600. The guys at the garage I use in Motherwell are used to doing my clutches as I burn them out quite often!!

I know its a "how long is a piece of string" question but how many miles before the clutch is on borrowed time, please?

such a sweet man. Indeed, I have spent some happy hours today sweating profusely....in the corridor waiting room at Hairmyres Hospital waiting for a friend surviving his clinic appointment.

And as number 2 RAV is in the garage for a check on its petrol gobbling obsession, have spent today burning up potholes with the number 1 RAV. Must need to get up sufficient speed to fly over potholes which means wheelies off the traffic lights at the Whirlies....
