Crunching Noises And Just Passed Mot

Hi All

I had the car mot on friday last (18 march 11) I asked the Mot man about a crunching noise, it sounds like it is comimg from the front of the car The car passed the MOT and the guy heard the noise but could not find out where it came from all he knew was it was not an mot failure point and needless to say it is a reputable garage. Travelling in a straight line is not to bad but if I put a fair lock on the steering wheel it crunches, it seems to be worst when starting from cold and I believe it is to do with steering or front wheels and it happens on both left and right lock.

Can someone please give me some suggestions

The car is a 1997 Rav4 5 door autoGX

any help is welcome

The nearside wheel bearing has a tendency to collapse. I wonder if its showing signs of wanting replacement before actually collapsing? If it had been loose, then the MOT should have picked it up but maybe it hasn't gone that far?

Another one if the dust shield metal thingy behind the disc which rusts away and then rubs against the disc. Or a stone stuck between this and the disc? Won't affect the braking.

These could be checked with the front wheels off the ground and turned by hand.

It's the cat sitting on the grobbly.... When you turn to full lock you squash his head a bit more.... Hence the crunching sound.... Don't worry, when he falls out the crunching will stop :yahoo:

Hi again

Thanks for the reply. The problem has been going on for about 2 years and gradually getting worse. I thought it was nothing to worry about as it always passed the Mot, but its got to the stage that I have to bite the bullet.

I will have to get someone to look at it.

thanks again

mlp.
