Engine Malfunction Light

Avensis D4D March 2002.

The engine malfunction light is displayed after cruising at 60-70mph after about 10+ miles. Sometimes after the light is displayed there is a loss of power for about 2-3 miles although cruising speed is maintained after which normal service is resumed without any further malfunctions, although the light stays on. On restarting the following day, or later on the same day the light is off and occasionally does not come on again, espacially if just local driving. I have cleaned the EGR valve, which resulted in a better fuel consumption of about 4mpg. I renewed the fuel filter recently and cleaned the MAFF valve. Anyone any ideas. Forgot to mention, diagnostic code P1228:Fuel Pump

The problem was resolved successfully by adding an injector and fuel system cleaner to the tank, in this case a Wynnes product. The system may have needed to be cleaned possibly due to using supermarket fuel for the last 90k miles. I have also noted the car running more smoothly and am achieving 52mpg suburban driving
