Hi

I purchased a new RAV 4 in December 2010. Colour Astral Black. It scratches very easily and the paint does not seem to have depth. Has anyone had a similar problem?

Suspect it is the lacquer coat that is getting marked and the marks show up much more on a black ground. That being said, there have been a number of reports previously of this problem.

Hi Jono,

My XT5 is Astral Black and suffers exactly the same problem. I think that the problem is a result of the paint that car manufacturers ( have to ) use these days which is essentially water based. It is much softer than the old fashioned solvent based types that were used, maybe, 30 years ago. The "solid" colours, such as Astral Black are not overcoated in lacquer in the same way as the metallic colours and this means that, basically, there is not as much paint on the car. The plus side is that it is dead easy to touch-up compared with metallic paint - and the RAV looks great in black, IMHO it suits it better than any other colour. If you haven't got any touch-up paint, Message "Parts King" and he will fix you up double quick.

That's interesting as Toyota flat colour touch up paint packs come with the colour and a clearcoat [At about a £1 per milliletre  ]
