Fuel Problems

Hello.

I have a 2000 Yaris SR, mileage about 103,000.

About a month back, the engine management light came on. My dad looked in to it, and we discovered the fault was to do with the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor. Anyway, he reset the light and I've done about 1,000 miles since and it hasn't come back. However, I have started to notice a very strong smell of petrol when I first start the car. It doesn't last for long, just a minute or so first thing. Has anyone else had a similar issue, or can advise on what to do next? I'm hoping the problem doesn't mean £££ for me! Does anyone know where the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor/bar is, and also how to access the fuel tank? I won't be doing this, my dad will be (obviously!)

Thanks!

It is possible you have a faulty sensor but any sensor function is to tell you of a potential problem in the fuel system itself and you may have to look elsewhere:

- Faulty fuel pump

- Blocked fuel filter

- Leak in system (you mentioned a smell - can you see any wet pipes, especially around the injection area)

- faulty pressure regulator, giving either high or low pressure

The fuel rail feeds the injectors and sits just in front of them

Access to the fuel pump and combined fuel pressure regulator is via an access hatch under the back seat

Hope that gives your Dad some things to check out, but if he is working on it, just remind him the fuel system is under pressure and he needs to depressurise it first or it will spray out when he disconnects a joint/union.
