Modifying Exhaust Systems

On a previous thread there were questions asked about the legality of gutting catalytic converters and fitting exhausts without them. I thought it illegal and other members had been told that it was ok. I thought it better to get the gen from the horse's mouth so I contacted the Dept of Transport.

They told me that it is illegal to fit an exhaust system on a vehicle with emission control specifications different to that fitted by the manufacturer and to modify a catalytic converter by removing its internal parts or failing to maintain it is a criminal offence and cmay lead to a large fine and confiscation of the vehicle.
