Hi, everybody. I have been reading the toyota forums a long time and found a lot of stuff usefull. I have a 54 Avensis d4d 2.0. I have bought a single mass conversion kit as it needs replacing, after talking to the local mechanic (with 30 years experience) the mechanic was not too keen to fit in the conversion kit. He said he will ring the main dealer up and ask if its possible, and also said he will take no responsibility if it dont work properly.I am from the greater manchester area (Ashton-Under-Lyne), so is it a good idea to convert it and is there anyone Locally who has done the conversions before, any recomendations. I have been quoted £180 for the job because ive known him a long tym. Please can i have your expertise advice. Thankyou and hope to hear from you soon.

I guess the dmf was introduced on diesel cars to make the transmission smoother and help to control the torque offered by diesel engines.

However diesel engines have been around for a very long time, without having to use DMF clutches. The concept hasn't worked out for a few cars and vans - whether its poor design, poor parts or what I don't know.

People have and are converting to get rid of the dmf. Equally, there are people on this forum who have not had a problem with the dmf.

Is your car covered by any warranty?? If so then maybe converting the dmf would cancel any cover. If its not covered, mu opinion is that its worth doing the conversion.

Hi Ateeq + welcome, You are more than welcome to ask questions on here but this is the Rav4 section + you may get answers more specific to your vehicle on the Avensis section, having said that the DMF/SMF question has been argued many times on here, One of our members is a mechanic + swears by the SMF conversion, And most main dealers would tell you not to do it, My own opinion, I am a black cab driver, for 30 yrs we had SMFs and NO problems, The dmfs apeared + we had a lot of problems, My cab was converted from DMF to SMF over 150,000 miles ago and I have had no problems, Other people may disagree but IMO, go for it, but at the end of the day its your decision  Stew

What sort of noise are you experiencing? Don't forget you have a new (different) flywheel + clutch + they will need time to mate together, and also your clutch bite point will be different, unless there is something untowards I'd give it a little bit of time till you get used to it. hope this helps  Stew

Its like a small revving noise, it happens when i lift the clutch after a gear change, and your quite right the biting point is completely different. Anyway ill give it sometime?? Thanks again

The synchros sometimes whine when changing down but that is normal.

Just over a week ago I lost all drive on my 2002 RAV4 D4D without any warning. I rang my mechanic who diagnosed it over the phone :o (said he'd done a few). He said that a dmf was about £700 from Toyota but not to bother with that and buy a smf conversion kit from one of the independants. He reckoned about £300. I went online and found this on eBay My link for £198 posted

The car now drives perfectly again and I notice no difference in smoothness etc. Very happy and I have no problem recommending the conversion to others.

  • 12 years later...

morning all sorry to bring up an old thread I have a 2004 rav4 2.0 d4d bought new and covered 71000 in that time still on the original clutch it has now started to judder and make a strange metallic noise I fear its time for a new clutch/flywheel.

My real question to you guys is how good is the SMF conversion?

Which kits would you recommend?

I have seen some range from £180 up to £500 would rather go for something that is recommended by you good people.

thank you in advance

Antonio
