Overdrive Problem With 1993 Hiace 2.8 Diesel

Hi everyone

First time here, great site! We bought a 1993 HiAce 2.8 Diesel camper in the summer, it's great we've been away several times already. Took it out yesterday and noticed "overdrive off" light was on and engine revs were up at speed, didn't like going much over 55 mph, sounded like it couldn't find top gear which of course if overdrive is off, it couldn't. Pressing the overdrive button didn't make any difference, normally it feels like it clicks in and out but it didn't do anything. I've never really driven an automatic before this so any advice greatly received.

Is there a simple fix to this? Will any local garage be able to do it or should it go to a toyota one?

I've read here about problems with the overdrive settings on imports confusing mph and kph, could this be the case here?

Thanks

Hi Trowelly,

I cant help you but just bought a 1994 2.8 diesel hiace campervan with the auto transmission and an overdrive button on the select lever. My wife drove it back but didnt know there was a button. There were no lights on the dash indicating 'overdrive off'. so presumably the overdrive was engaged. MY wife reports that it cruised OK at around 65 mph and the engine didnt seem to be over revving, although there is no revcounter fitted. What I don't know is how many forward ratios there are. I will investigate and report what I find here, and hope that others may also post replies. I am reasonably certain that the speed in MPH or KPH does not affect any settings.

Thanks miniwini problem solved

local garage took a look the o/d button had got stuck somehow in off position they worked their magic and it was free within minutes.

Since then been from the fens to lands end and back without a hiccup as well as local pootling about.

Interestingly whenever I called local toyota dealership the service department were always on a break and never made the promised return call........

Keep on trucking

Trowelly
