I have just taken delivery of a used couple years old (09 plate)1.8 automatic TR Avensis.

Has anyone got any tips how to stop and START on a steep hill using the Push Button Handbrake ? I am a tad worried in case of rollback!

cheers guys

Hi I work for Toyota and most of the lads I work with have the avensis on the lease plan,

All you need to do is put the park break on and when you need to pull off just do so, no need to press the button again as it disengages automatically,

Hi folks , many thanks to Jan& Tone for your reply although with respect, that sounds a bit like "suck it and see" to me and I rather wanted to be fairly sure , hence my nervousness.

Shoney...many thanks for your reply as well. It is very good of you to take the time to respond, but am I not right in thinking that what you say only refers to Manual Transmission and NOT Automatic. At least that is what it seems to say in the Handbook ....or have I got that wrong. Please forgive me if it looks as if I am challenging a "pro". I am not of course especailly as you work with the cars but my car is an automatic !

If you can spare the time to come back on that I would be grateful.

Best regards to all.

Jayfree, yes I'm afraid it was a suckit and see sort of Answer as you may gather from my profile i don't have an avensis now (used to, but hadPrius for 3 years now...)

Just trying to be helpful, the other answer you had seems more like a usable one, but if you really want a definitive answer, give your local Mr T a call

Ive been using an Avensis with push button handbrake, its a bit weird to use, but basically you come to a stop with your foot on the footbrake, press the handbrake button and it holds you, when ready to move off just apply a little more gas and it disengages automatically, you wont roll back as the brake wont come off until you are just moving forward, I find the position of the button in just about the worse place it could be but you do get used to it after a bit

Im in and out of different cars all the time, it is disconcerting when you reach down for the handbrake only to remember you dont have a lever  but a quick push of the button and you are done

Thankyou all for your responses which are much appreciated.

I am going to find a steep hill and try the bloomin' thing out. That way I'll soon find out the pro's and the cons.

Thanks again though, this being my first time of using this forum, it is encouraging to know that there are so many folks out there who are willing to help out and spare the time to reply.

I am really much obliged.

All the best

Shoney hi again and thanks for coming back. I have.... and it did'nt!... So as I said earlier,I am going to have to try it out " in the flesh " so to apeak, on the steep carpark slopes, with hopefully nothing coming up behind me and hope for the best.

I have to say however that I am totally mystified that I can't seem to get any positive or definite reply on this matter from anyone..... and that includes Club Toyota,

a couple of Toyota dealers, Institute of Advanced Motorists and even yourself who work with the cars. It seems that no-one owns or drives an AUTOMATIC avensis and goes up steep hills !!!!

Someone must fall into that category somewhere and I hope that I will be able to locate them sooner than later. I even phoned Toyota themselves , the so called help desk, and they were absolutely useless.

Perhaps I should have gone for the BMW after all!

But as I said I appreciate you coming back cos it is always good to talk to someone about it even if I can't get a definitive answer. Cheers !

Jay

I know my earlier post was a 'shot in the dark' but listen up.... I had a gen2 Prius with a foot operated 'handbrake' - took a little getting used to but on hill starts it was easy bearing in mind that effectively the Prius is an automatic.... a little on the gas and release the parking brake.... no rolling back... !!

the Gen 3 Prius has a 'hill start assist' on the footbrake so the problem doesn't arise...

Give it a try while you are experimenting, I'll be interested to see if it works - the principle being the same as an ordinary handbrake - little gas/release brake/no rollback....
