54 Avensis Estate Strange Noise.

All,

I've been a bit of a lurker on this forum for a while now, and last week I became a proud owner of a 54 plate Estate with 79K on the clock. Full car details are below.

Avensis Estate,

2004, (54 plate),

T3-S,

1.8 VVTI 16V engine,

79K,

ultimately i'm very happy with the car and love the comfort and fuel economy i'm getting, 40 MPG. (other car is an Alfa GTV).

Now I have a issue that I need some guidance with. I have a strange noise that seems to be related to the gearbox, it almost sounds like it's a Diesel van, the noise isn't loud in anyway, but seems to be getting worse (in the week I have had her) and is worse higher up the gears.

I'm suspicious of the gear box because it only happens when gears are engaged, and under load, sounds perfect when I rev her in natural, or dip the clutch.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I purchased it from a dealer and will be giving them a call tomorrow. My concern is that they will state there is "nothing wrong with it sir" and send me on my way. Like I said, the sound is still quite subtle, but I'm concerned unless I do something about it soon my car will be out of warranty, and/or the problem with be more expensive to fix.

Any advice/comments would be welcome.

thanks

TP

Hi and welcome. Have you had the box oil checked/changed?

Thanks for the reply.

actually haven't anything looked at changed, etc. The initial assessment is mine alone.

Maybe that is the next step, check the Gear Box Oil. However I would have thought that the Gear box being sealed that it wouldn't leak oil, and if it did and lost all oil the Gear Box would die quickly (within 100 miles, for eg). I have checked around the gearbox and cannot se any obvious signs of leaks.

It sounds like the gearbox bearings, but doesn't have any other symptoms that I have seen listed in other posts (difficultly selecting gear, jumping out of 5th, "whining").

anyway, thanks for the advice.

The gearbox will still use up a small amount of oil even if there isn't any signs of leakage. I know this well as when I checked both my VW Polo and Audi A6 3.2 both boxes had less that the correct amount of lube. No leaks and I'd owned the Polo from new and the Audi from 50k. I'd look at that 1st.

But it does sound a little like a bearing that could be the problem. There is a product made by Forte that you can use in the box for whining. But if you've just bought the car I'd do as your doing and take it back to the place you bought it from. And if your un-happy I' reject the car unless they are going to put it right.
