this seems to be normal on the avensis think it has something to do with pressure in the fuel tank

Yup, same on mine, I was going to ask the same question!

The computer 'range' does not seem to tally with the guage either, I checked it resets with a fill up and then I tried to reset it again - says 'Reset OK' but still seems to waver quite a lot like the fuel guage.

When you open the fuel tank do you also get a huge pressure release?

Weird!

This is actually due the plastic at the back of the display impeding the movement of the needle. I had it looked at by the dealer and they just basically melted a small bit of the plastic with a hot needle and the guage is fine since! The tank used to read half full when it was actually completely full.. Anyhow since the dealer looked at it, it's been perfect.

Hope this helps!

I have 99 Ave and it is the same on mine, though not as bad as some of you have said.

But the gauge does seem to be slightly inaccurate most of the time, usually saying one reading and then as someone else pointed out, if I turn ingnition on again, it looks like there is more fuel in than there was earlier.

But have learnt to live with it. Seems a bit of a faff to get it fixed, so I probably won't bother.

My '94 Corolla did it and my '88 Carina does it, i think it's just one of those things...

I had a simialr problem, the dealer fixed it no charge. I asked if it was a common problem, the answer was a bit erm hmmm, uh, well, no. Which in common terms I think means yes.
