Rear Window Noise

A minor problem with my Auris T3 09 reg...

When I open a rear window over about 40mph, even a quarter, the car interior starts to resonate really badly, to the extent that it sounds like a pneumatic drill is going off in my head, and my ears pop.

What the hell is that all about? I've never been in another car where that's an issue. It doesn't happen with the front windows.

Is this a known design fault, or is there a fix?

Cheers!

I had the same "problem" few years ago with a Nexia; it's a matter of aerodynamics, turbulences are created when any rear window is opened.

You can solve the problem partially fitting wind deflectors.

You can solve the problem by opening the front windows a fraction or sunroof if you have one. Ford Escorts used to do this to

My 2004 Megane II was the same, not tried in the Auris however!

Seems fine in my car? Saying that.. there's never an occasion where the rear windows are open and the front wouldnt be open too so perhaps thats why!

You'll probably find that this actually happens in all (most) cars when the rear windows are open a certain amount, it's not specific to Toyota / Auris etc...

My sunroof does it when it's open so far, over certain speeds.

A fix for this is to fit wind deflectors. There are a couple of threads about them on here.

Cheers, Dave.
