Tow Bar On A 4.1 ?

Hi Gang,

It would be rather useful for me to have a towbar on my RAV 4.1 (specifically for dragging a motorbike around trackdays).

Just wondering if any of you have done this to a 4.1 and if you have any top tips, hints or suggestions?

I googled "toyota RAV4 towbar" and nearly a million results cam back :-)

I'm just after a cheap and cheerful towbar that comes as a complete kit.

Cheers!

Stu.

why on earth do you want a towbar.... yoyu said you're going to drag the bike round so use a rope - far cheaper

The bar simply bolts on the legs at the back (where else?) in the holes already there. You can nick a light/lattern from the back of most train wagons in sidings.Job done!

Stu,

Fitted one to my 4.1, bought second hand of fleabay £40, electrics kit also from the same place £12, which included cable, socket, buzzer and bracket. Had a couple of minor issues, the RAV was previously fitted with a towbar which was removed before I bought it, so the pre tapped holes had corroded, which needed to be re-tapped M12*1.25, dont try and force the bolt in unless you have access to a welder. Electrics relatively easy with the help of a multi meter, but you will need to run a 2 core cable from the offside rear to the near to pick up the near side tail light (I think)

Trust this helps

I purchased the iron work from an on-line towbar discounter for about £70... that just bolted onto the the rear chassis members in place of the towing lugs (two bolts each side). The harness kit I purchased from Toyota... that just plugged into the wiring harness (easy-peasy), included the h/duty flasher and dash indicator light (an MOT requirement I think you will find). The harness was about £30. Toyota towbars (ironwork) are very expensive... over £250 from memory!

You also have to remove both rear internal side panels to gain access to the rear light wiring harness to plug the kit in. Wires then exit underneath the rear valance via two rubber crommets (one each side). You want to allow two or three hours I recon for fitting as the two side panels take a bit of time to remove and refit...

Good luck :)
