Secondary Air Pump Problem

Hi, Ive got a 2001 celica 190 and the engine management light came on.Took it to a dealer and they stated the fault was a secondary air pump and quoted £1200.00 to replace it!. They reset the light and test drove the car and the light did not appear again but the mechanic stated if it came on again I would need to replace the pump.Apart from the occasional sluggishness when cold the car seems to run fine. Do I need to replace the pump and If I dont will it do any damage to the engine.£1200 is a lot of money, any cheaper fixes?
