Fake Pop Up Virus Warning Altert!

This is not related to the Prius but since it happened on this forum this is as good a place to post the warning as any.

Whilst posting a reply to a post this evening I was suddenly confronted with an annoying pop up window telling me my PC was infected with a virus, total BS since my pc is fully protected with Norton Internet Security 2011.

This is some sort of fake warning and nothing more than a rather shappy advert so be warned!

I got it once yesterday and once today using this site.

It appears to be a flash link that takes you to another site. It isn't anything I have cliked on as it happend both times as I was reading posts.

unable to close browser and it seems to try to run a trojan as Avast have picked it up and blocked a Trojan each time.

I was just reading this post as it popped up on my screen!

Took a screenshot of it before closing the window.

Davey, note you had facebook open at the time?? I wonder if others also had that iniquitous rubbish open too?? They are not well known for their security which is why I wouldn't touch them with a proverbial!!

It would appear that we have another trojan / virus again :crybaby:

Yes my anti-virus zapped something the other day when I was on this site!

If it's any help.

Avast is picking the Trojan up on my desktop when the webpage gets diverted to the virus weblink.

McAfee is not picking it up on my laptop when the webpage gets diverted to the virus weblink. So maybe whichever antivirus is being used to monitor the server is not picking this one up.

It wouldn't be unusual for facebook to send out a virus, but in this case it was TOC, as the page i was viewing was replaced with the image you see in the screenshot, yet all other tabs were working correctly.

Also, i don't add any applications or accept any requests on FB, and i don't click on any links posted to my page without checking they are genuine with whoever posted it on my wall.

I should add that my PC has not picked up any virus from that pop up, i simply closed it and run a virus scan to double check, but there are some gullible people out there who will click the OK button and allow the virus to hit their system.

TOC need to sort this problem ASAP before people start to look elsewhere for advice about their cars.

Absolutely not, in my case at least. I had a single tab opened on this site only hence my post.

I should also add that this never happened when i was using chrome, but as their plugins kept failing i changed to firefox a few days ago, and now it has happened.

Maybe it only happens to certain browsers?

Was just a thought. Not had it myself as use safari on an ipad. No one can be bothered to write viruses for ipads.... Not yet anyway!

Probably pointless as they need to be hooked up to a PC anyway, so they will probably make one for a PC that can be transfered across when you sync...

Only when you first get them out of the box and to back up. No reason otherwise, everything else can be done wirelessly

I see that this 'e-set' attack has not gone away as I have just been sent to that page 5 minutes ago while reading one of the updated posts.

Not as bad as the previous attack a few months ago which happened while I was away on holiday and practically trashed my other half's work laptop. She was not amused but at least I managed to sort when I got home.

I have Windows 7 64bit, using the latest version of the ie browser and i have no other tabs or browsers open.

Not worth targetting Macs is it since PC';s are so dominant! :!Removed!:

Possibly I'd rather see it as there is a more technical reason for not targeting it :-) I mean look at the iOS devices versus Android and the others. You can't bring the minority argument to that conversation, yet Google has already twice had to hit the big red button to remotely uninstall malicious software. there is a technical design behind all of this and todate the only way to get through on OSX is with thanks to the idiot inbetween the chair and the keyboard.

Very true though I was just joking with my silly comment.

Sorry thumbsup.gif I've lost all sense of humor following a review of the most useless test strategy in the last 4 hours originating from supposedly the worlds leading systems integrator. Apologies if I over reacted. I think I need a beer and a curry now.
