How Do You Take A Front Fog Light Out?

Hi,

I have a 5 door hatch Avensis CDX D4D on a 51 plate. Looks like a stone has speared up and cracked the lens on my front drivers side fog light. I have been told by dealer you have to replace the full light as it is a sealed unit (ouch £41 + vat), and cannot just replace the lens.

Do you have to take the protective cover plates off the underside of the engine to get to the back of the light housing, or, is there an easier way?

Also, is the light a different shape on the D4D or, can a fog light from an earlier model be used. In other words, are they all the same, as I want to ring round some wreckers yards and don't know whether I should be asking for one for a D4D, or just a Avensis in general if they are the same!

Regards

Craig

All the lights were changed when the face lift model came out in 2000, yours should be a clear type fog light and the pre 2000 ones have a frosted type lens.

As for removing the fog light im not to sure but i thought it would pop out rather than having to remove the protective cover plates off the underside of the engine bay. I notice a cover next to the fog lamps on my car maybe these come off to allow access to the lamp?

nezerr.

Thanks.

I have been emailing Toyota wreckers as parts are normally cheaper, but prices quoted for 2nd hand are dearer than a new one from main dealer, (quoted £50 for one). Also they are reluctant to split a pair.

I've had another look and it seems like the only way to access the back of the light to dismantle the fixing is to to take the plastic protective covers underneath off so you can get to the back of it. You can get your hand in at the side from the front as there is a vent gap and you can see/feel a screw fixing but cannot get onto it other than from the back. It doesn't seem to just pop out? Seems a lot of work just to get this out?
