Noisy Yaris Diesel Gearbox

Hi, I have a 2002 1.4 Diesel which has done 170,000miles.(90% motorway miles). The gearbox has always been a little noisy but of late it has got very slowly worse. It's a general wining noise but when I'm stationary and I depress the clutch the noise stops. Gear change is fine and the rest of the car is great. Any clues from anyone. Many thanks.

Hello, I assume you have checked the gearbox oil level or changed it ... apart from that it could be a bearing on the input shaft.

Pete.

Maybe the clutch release bearing on its way out? But I'd start with the gearbox oil to.

" when I'm stationary and I depress the clutch the noise stops. "

Big clue. Sounds like the gearbox main bearings are on their way out.

As a quickie, change the gearbox oil...
