Yaris Wont Start

Hi All,

I'm hoping someone can help with a really strange problem that my wife's 2004 1.0 yaris has just developed. I pumped up the tyres with a 12v compressor and heard a pop all of a sudden and the fuse for the cig lighter and radio had blown. I replaced that straight away but after that the car would just turn over and not fire....car was towed to toyota and they say it needs a new ECU because it was spiked by power (at a cost of 810!) so I found a working ECU from a scrapped car and had the immobiliser info cloned to the new unit. Interestingly the guy that looked at the old ECU said it was in perfect working order with no signs of damage to the board. After trying the scrappy ECU on my car the same symptoms still occur (engine turning over and not starting) - the engine management light is off. I can't help but think that Toyota have done no other investigation work apart from checking a 100a fuse which normally blows if the car detects a surge in power (it was fine). Any hints/ideas would really be appreciated!!

Hmmm.

I'd take all the fuses out one at a time one and test them with a tester to make sure there isn't another fuse blown somewhere. I can't remember but there might be a second fuse panel inside the car - the manual will tell you...

But my other piece of info is that I don't think the ECUs from French and Jap cars are interchangeable - (French chassis numbers start with V, !Removed! with J).

There's a chance that if it really is the ECU, that you have got wrong type and are getting similar symptoms for another reason...

Thanks for the speedy reply....I should have mentioned that the car was towed to Toyota by RAC who said they checked all of the fuses. I guess Toyota took this as 'job done' and not bothered to investigate further which surprised me. In the process of finding the right fuse for the cig lighter I checked the condition of every one of them too and only found one blown (in the car and under the bonnet).

I'll double check the ECUs too but I'm sure they were identical in every number and letter. I also confirmed that it was from a working vehicle but I guess you never know....
