I wonder what kind of MPG this will give? The 1.4 diesel already gives 65-70MPG doesn't it? The weight of the batteries is probably going to kill the fuel economy a fair bit.

Oh man, that was such a ridiculous advert! It was like watching an advert for Tron

@PumpkinSteve - Thats what I thought, but it does depend on how much the batteries weigh. The diesel engine weighs something like 90kg while the petrol engine is something like half of that. I'm not sure what the petrol engine + the Battery pack will weigh in the HSD; Worst case, the old PbH+ Battery pack was about 90kg IIRC so it'd be like carrying 2 engines or an permanent passenger , but the newer NiMH batteries would weigh a lot less.

I reckon I average 55-58mpg in town and 75-80mpg on the motorway; Average on a tank is something like 58-64mpg which is about a months driving and 550-600 miles covered.

It will be interesting as the 1.33 is the most inefficient of all the Yaris engines (Can't beat the diesel or the 1.0 on the motorway or in town) but it is a better match for the HSD than the 1.0 as the HSD will give a huge mpg advantage in town while the 1.33 is strong enough to be useful on the motorway (The 1.0L loses a lot of its efficiency advantage on the motorway because it has to rev much higher than the 1.33 or diesel to maintain motorway speeds)

It's a pity Toyota have turned their back on diesel as a diesel HSD Yaris would be absolutely insane even with the extra weight :yahoo:

They could even add a VVTi-style mode to it so it can run in a super low-emissions 'diesel generator' mode while in town so you use the electric motor as the prime mover, and then switch to a normal diesel mode for direct power at higher speeds and ridiculous mpg :)

If I could drive 60mph everywhere I reckon my Yaris could already get close to 1000miles out of a tank so I reckon you'd easily be able to get over 1000 miles out of a tank on a combined cycle with a diesel HSD setup

And that would be in a NORMAL car without a stupidly large fuel tank, and not some specially designed super hyper-miling car!
