Mk1 Probs

Ive just bought a f plate mk1, 126k on the clock for a very good price. The thing is the car seems to be seriously down on power and doesnt pull cleanly. Oil pressure and temp are ok, the car doesnt use water or oil or smoke. Also today... my first day driving it the Engine bay cooling fan and Battery dischrge lights came on. Ive checked the alternator belt and connections but cant see an probs. Is the alternator shot or does any1 know of another reason why these lights have come on? Werid thing is..when the revs reach aroung 7k the lights go out??!!!?? Im very confused, going to get the alternator checked out tomorow but was wondering if any of you guys have come across any of these probs. Any ideas will be gratefully received, Im seriously dissapointed with my lack of power and want to get this sorted.

on an f reg could be the t-vis is stuck, which would mean you don't get all of the power as half of the ports are restricted.....

hmmm, ok so how would i check and or fix this?
