Auris Steering For Handicapped People

Hello there,

My name is Charalampos and I come from Cyprus.

I own a brand new Auris for two and a half years.

My problem is that I drive by mostly using my left hand, due to the fact that my right hand is handiccaped.

I find my Auris steering wheel heavy even at low speed (30-50 km), so this is causing me muscle problems to my left shoulder.

Apart from this, my Auris is PERFECT.

Any ideas on how to face this problem?

Any help greatly appreciated

A simple remedy might be to inflate the tyres more.

I recently had my front tyres changed and they are inflated to 40psi and the steering feels too light compared to the old tyres at 36psi.

you need to be careful on wet roads if you over inflate.

They were inflated by the tyre fitters, and i've read on here that 40psi is the recommended pressure.

the handbook will advise the correct pressurs.and that will depend on intended road speed.

some models will be a 42 psi even, for above 99 mph.for fronts, but non are recommended above 38 psi for rears.

It's denfinately not the tyres. It was the same when I changed tyres two months ago.

I thinking of asking advice from a mechanic. Could be something regarding the hydraylics pump of the steering. Maybe I could make some replacements.

Anyone heard of such modifications?

I 've already asked them. They said that it was normal. A member of the crew have driven it as well. In fact, he informed me that the steering system is electrical in that it is quite easy to handle.

Thinking to replace my Auris to a Mercedes, if it keeps huring my shoulder :(

I don't know if Toyota are the same, but when i owned a SEAT and a Skoda, i was able to adjust the steering weight myself by plugging it into Vagcom.

Toyota must have a similar machine to enable/disable certain aspects, and make adjustments etc.

I would ask another dealer for advice.

I would find it hard to believe that Electronic Steering could not be adjusted? Cant be that hard surely?

I already have a steering ball but it doesn't make the difference.

The major problem I deal is when I take on long curves, even at 40 to 60 km. The steering puts down force as if it tends to go back to straight direction. Of course, this is right, though I believe that it is more harsh on my shoulder than the VW Golf I owned before.

It's definately harder than the c-class Mercedes I have driven a week ago. My friend that owns it, told me that his car has a "speed sensitive steering system". Soft on low speed and harder at higher speeds.

I will ask my dealer again about plugging it to a vagcom.

The major problem I deal is when I take on long curves, even at 40 to 60 km. The steering puts down force as if it tends to go back to straight direction. Of course, this is right, though I believe that it is more harsh on my shoulder than the VW Golf I owned before.

Don't ask them to plug it into VAGCOM!!! They will think you are daft!

Vagcom only works on VAG group cars, and isn't a dealer tool, its a DIY diagnostic tool for people with Audi/Skoda/VW/SEAT. It won't work on Toyota!

My point was, if VW has a dealer computer that can adjust these settings, then Toyota should have a similar system.

As for the speed sensitive steering, i'm pretty sure most cars with power steering have this these days otherwise we would all be having problems driving straight.

Its designed so the wheels are easier to turn at a light speed for things like parking and town manouvers, but as you speed up it gets less responsive so you don't steer to sharply on a stretch of motorway while overtaking etc.

I would geuss that yours already has this (check the user manual?) but it could be set up in a different manner to other cars.

Either way, i'd be amazed if it can't be adjusted at the dealers simply by altering some ECU coding.

Guys, I am very happy to inform you that I finally found a solution.

I have ordered an electronic item called "EPAs Lightening Module" from the company SDL - England. It reduced the torque effort required to steer by 50%.

I have just installed it yesterday. Thanks again to all of you. I appreciate the help!
