Auris' Stereo Speed Sensitive Volume Control

Listening the car stereo may be difficult or annoying when engine sounds interfere as the speed of the car increases, so speed-sensitive volume controls eliminates this problem by adjusting the volume to the speed.

Auris’ stereo has built in this feature, but is not connected from factory.

Solution is pretty simple, you need 1…1.5 ft of wire ended with a small terminal… The terminal must be inserted in the hole 3 of E26 radio connector; other wire end must be tapped into speed signal wire, pin 36 (violet wire) of E46 clock connector.

Put back radio and clock and the job is done. Eg., if you set the volume at “10” when the car is stationary, there’s no need to readjust the volume at “15” when the car runs with 60 mph, the radio is increasing the volume, gradually by itself…

i would like to try this but am a bit of a novice when it comes to removing trim and electrics. What wire/end connector, does the wire come with an end connector, how do they fit together are just the start of the trivial questions. Is it really simple? Auris '08 T spirit

Very interesting post Tavy thank you,

A couple of quick questions if you don't mind....

The settings that appear (low/med or high), what exactly do they do?....does it improve the quality of sound at all or further amplify?...the reason I ask this is because I have the I-pod connector stereo in the Auris I have just bought (allegedly an upgrade). The sound quality I am currently experiencing is very much unacceptable and I plan to fit an old single din JVC stereo I have had for about 3.5 years in my last car because it is that weak and tinny sounding (and I don't have an I-pod anyway to use the adaptor).

Secondly I have heard that the Speakers are actually OK in the Auris once you fit a correctly amplified stereo....is this something that you can verify or are there still some overall issues with sound quality?

B Rgds

Dave

You're welcome, Dave !

The settings improve amplifying, they don't affect sound quality, only modify the response curve with the speed increasing/decreasing.

I'm satisfied with my stereo and Speakers, I wouldn't modify anything because I don't like listening the music and bass very loud - loud sounds can damage your hearing ! - and sound quality is OK, even with mp3 disks.

Thanks very much Tavy, I may even attempt this before fitting my old DAB unit to see if it improves sufficiently before taking everything apart too much.

Did you say I need to disconnect the car Battery before starting on this?....complete novice.

Appreciate the impressively quick response that you just gave there too mate :)

It's a simple job, all that you need is a 10mm spanner in order to undo the 6mm nut of "-" Battery terminal. Removing the "-" Battery terminal sometimes, for about 15 min. is useful for engine ECU, it forgets driver's bad habits and cleans all the bugs .

Are you guys actually talking about the Auris SR?

Surely the adaptive volume system has been implemented? I certainly was expecting it to be. I had no reason to think otherwise.

Untl I came across this thread.

After buying my Auris, I had assumed that there was some other reason why the audio system on my new (May 6 2011) Auris wasn't quite up to the same standard as my old (late 1999) Nissan Primera S.

In fact I recently discovered that my Auris doesn't even seem to be able to tell me when the windscreen washer bottle is getting low on fluid. My old Nissan had could do this with a dashboard lamp. So maybe you are all right?

Just goes to show a car may be younger - but not necessarily better.

If you can't tell that speed sensitive volume has been fitted or not, you would'nt benefit from a better stereo ;)

Although a low washer fluid light would be handy, I would'nt say another car with one is better.

I chose my Auris SR for a few different reasons:Reasonable performance as most of my driving is around town, good mpg, good equipment level, competitivley priced

I don't think the Auris is bad. I'm just shocked that this was (allegedly) omitted. I note however that the ASL in my Auris is there to change. So maybe it's just my ears.

I'm not going to worry about the washer bottle. There's plenty of other gadgets to play with and it gives me another excuse to look under the bonnet.

Okay, I have just got my Auris through major service...they did EGR valve clean for me and updated my ECu to the latest version after reset....everything I wanted to do is now done with the exception of stereo (Mansfield techs had not come across this before).

The technicians were amazing and really helpful...according to my wife as I was not able to go, I gave her a list of things and they did it all without question (as above), they also said they would do the stereo for me if i could give them all of the details...so I have just been skimming through this thread to pass the info over to them when I get a chance.

Last question (I think)....where can I buy the correct wire cable from at the right length, with the correct terminals etc.?.....is this a genuine Toyota part or does it need to be purchased elsewhere and any idea on cost at all?

Many thanks again for a great finding and thread

I personally used a piece (half meter circa) of wire ended with a small pin, that I recovered from some split type air conditioning wiring. First time I checked the hole in connector, then I choose the pin so, first time remove all the things in order to get acces at that connector, than find a pin to match that hole...

So it should be relatively easy for my Toyota garage to find a cable that will fit then if they undertake the work?

It just looked like a telephone cable or internet jack on the picture and no idea what the other end looks like or how it attaches....if Toyota are willing to do it though it saves me taking things apart and invalidating my warranty (good chance I will break something as well lol).

Thanks again mate, sorry to keep querying on this one.

Yes, it's a very easy job for them...

Good idea to not lose the warranty.

Apologies for digging up this old thread, however I just wanted to extend my thanks to the posters for thier excellent tutorial and photos of how to retrofit speed sensitive volume to the Auris! Rather than modify what I would consider a good car, I'm hoping to add little value added features such as this. Next up with be to upgrade the dipped beam headlamp bulbs and to add a 3.5mm auxilary audio socket.

Kind regards

John

Just having a go at installing the auto volume control to my Auris,Radio /CD removed and wire fitted to rear of clock as per Tavy's exellent advice, but i find the connection for the pin hole in the radio is far smaller than i expected and cant find anything suitable.May be able to get one from a car radio specialist, but how to describe type and size. No body else on these post seems to have problems fitting this pin when carrying out this mod, am i missing something.?

I also have these steering wheel controls but i like others who dont have auto volume increase i wish to fit it.

As a cars noise increases with speed then this saves you manualy adjusting the volume each time to compensate for it.

Some models already have this fitted.

Nothing strange about it.
