T180 Loss Of Power

Hi all,

Just thought I'd share this with you...

Driving to work in my Rav yesterday, I was accelerating down a slip road onto a dual carriageway, I got to approx 65mph and with my foot down, I heard a strange noise from the engine and the car stopped accelerating! Panic! I took my foot off the throttle and put it back on, no increase in speed yet the engine was still revving...

Luckily there was a layby a few hundred yards on and I was able to limp into it... I stopped the engine and restarted it - no problems, revved it - no problems, put it into gear - no problems, lifted the clutch and it drove but when it got to 5mph it wouldnt accelerate any more.... I stopped the car with engine running put the handbrake on and tried pulling away carefully, the back end pulled down and the engine was trying to stall so no probs with the clutch...

I called the AA, 30mins later the patrol arrived. Told him the problem and he said it sounds like a hose had come off.... Sure enough he found that a hose had come off the intercooler (looking down past the Battery, the bottom hose)... He dropped the plastic under tray and the jubilee clip fell out, he got a new clip from his van and refitted it.... Started the car and hey presto fixed!!!

Now my question is; do I put this down to a badly fitted or loose clip or could there be something else amiss that caused the hose to come off? The car is now running fine with no apparent problems....

Thanks in advance

Tom

hello Tom

You'd pay attention on all banded connections time to time because of diesel engine nature with shaking.

if now all is in order then relax and be careful. Cheers/Igor

I've nevr known a hose clip fail in that way. I think you will find that at some time in its history the cooler pack has been off. Its either down to some body repair work or engine work. Is this one that had the head gasket done?

This exact thing happened to me after I had a garage replace my timing belt. On my way home accellerating at the bottom of a hill I heard a big boom, lost power and had some smoke come out the rear. Called the mechanic who, after some serious thinking, asked me to check that hose... He'd forgotten to tighten the clip. Yeah... wont be using that garage again....

I was told that the car was using oil in the past and had been in for new pistons...

Thanks

Tom

That is your answer. When the pipe comes off it has an oily residue so the mechanic needs to tighten it up well after wiping it out or it just gets blown off under pressure. It caught me out on one I did once
