Replacement Front Discs & Pads.

Greetings all!

My 2.2 TR Diesel has just been serviced, 60k, by Mr T (prompt, fine, not cheap (?? £219:05??)..). They advised front discs lipped & pads 80% worn: Rears fine (I believe all original..). As I'm old & slow I decided to leave it a bit.

Mr T quoted £305.

National Tyres quoted £261 (might be able to get 20% off that.., if so £208:80..)

Any views or should I try the local small mechanics??

My old dad, born 1903, no longer with us, who bought his first car in Oxford Street (yes, that one..) for £10 from a bloke who guaranteed he'd buy it back for £5 always said the thing to check on with any car is did it go round corners & stop: Engine? - that's a secondary consideration (he had a point..)

Some years ago I'd have done it myself but what with the knees, the back & general aged attitudes I'd rather pay someone else...

I've seen the chat about Pagid being questionable, and also EuroParts prices of £47:40 discs, £37:14 pads, (both Pagid) free delivery..

Regards & thanks in advance..

Bosch supply the pads so its a reasonable bet that they also supply the discs. Toyota can charge a premium for their service but you do get top quality parts & service. Tyre fitters should be avoided in my view. Their staff are not as well trained, scratch your wheels and they supply cheaper lower quality parts. (I set my pads on fire on my company car cos they were supplied by a fast supply & fit tyre company rather than Ford.) You can shop around but 'what price peace of mind'?

how many miles has your car done. i changed my pads at 34 thousands miles and yes my discs were lipped but by no means ready for replacement. discs do wear out especially nowadays because we arent allowed to use asbestos in em but lipped does not mean knackered.

oh and the front pads are really easy to change once the wheel is off and the steering is turned so you can get at the calliper....5 mins either side. it is worth attempting this yourself!

Take a look at the MTEC discs and pads. I'm very happy with the stopping and the look of them. I've just bought a full set for my VW Polo Tdi and the stopping on it now is amazing.

Mr T would say the disks are lipped most are after a few thousand miles, they are always touting for work.

Mr T wanted €165 to replace my rear pads, I bought them myself for €35 and the local mechanic fitted them for €25

Mr T wanted €165 to replace my rear pads,

seems that Eire is an expensive place - in the UK we have a fixed price promise of £100 for pad replacement on an Avensis by dealers.
