Dab Radio

To get DAB radio on a new Gen 3 do you have to order the JBL pack or are these different things?

They are different options/accessories ... the DAB unit is around £450 Inc fitting and VAT - the JBL speaker and amp upgrade is an eye-watering £1,100 or so (although to be fair a chunk of that is labour) ...

A few on here have the DAB fitted and enjoy it - although same as FM you need to be in a good reception area to hear the best from it ...

Before lashing out on a DAB radio check what reception is like in the areas you are more likely to travel. There are some poor reception areas around the country.

Where I live it's terrible. In fact many local ICE suppliers doen't even bother to stock DAB units.

A local ICE supplier may be able to advise.:)

Pure Highway, about 70 quid, and connect via the Aux socket, job done!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/PURE-Highway-Car-Radio-Transmitter/dp/B0012GLXMU

Mine has a small vecro tab which I used to attach to the dash, looks good too!

But you are, presumably dependant on its (?small) speaker?

anything plugged into the Aux socket (inside the rear of the central storage box is the one I use) uses the car stereo system for reproduction and is exactly the same as the radio/hard drive for sound.

Yup, great reproduction through the car stereo system, Sometimes lose signal round the Chilterns, must be all that Chalk! Good reception in Midlands and London though.

Oh, right, and this is on the Gen2 as well?(asks he reaching for his credit card); so it presumably takes the power from the cigarette lighter and pushes the output out through the Aux?

AFIK the same procedure is for ANY car with an aux socket for the connection of an external audio device.

I can't remember where the one on the Gen2 was, but think it was inside the central box at the front...

Power will be either from the device itself or from the 12v socket.

Yes it's there. I don't suppose that when my mobile rings it will mute the Aux socket in the same way that the built-in radio mutes?

If you connect the phone via bluetooth then yes it will mute the radio.

Not sure whether if you pair the phone via BT and use the ipod bit via the aux socket it works though...(assuming it's an I-Phone? Worth an experiment I expect :yahoo:

Yep I listen to my iPhone often in my Gen 2 via aux in. When it rings the stereo is muted anyway.

In fact it works both ways with the iPhone, because it mutes it's audio output itself too during calls whether on the handset or bluetooth.

As per the original topic, we have both DAB and JBL on our Gen III. As Jont already stated, they are separate options.

We are loving it, and we live on top of the Chilterns ;-). Kiss 100 never sounded so good in a car with the beats pumping at 45 thumbsup.gif

we do come down from the hills ;-) reception is 100% better than FM as we cant get the london based stations on FM.

but with any wireless service it all depends on where your stomping ground :-) is. What is a good answer for one maybe useless for someone else. In our case it solves a problem fm cant fix.

Yes I believed what Toyota was saying about reception until a friend with a DAB radio drove me home and had reception along roads my Prius wouldn't. So as a test I took my Battery operated home radio in the car. It works 100% of the time, never stopped, wheras the Toyota stopped for great chunks of the drive. Have started call with Toyota UK direct but so far have not reached anyone senior enough to get this fixed. Dealership tells me that DAB radios no longer being sold, am looking at the GT86 and despite it being DAB ready they can't sell me a DAB with it. Despite having reported this issue as soon as we bought the car they are telling me it is too late to do anything about it because for two years we believed Toyota about lack of signal. Can't work out wether to layinto them properly or simply take my custom elsewhere for the new car we are about to buy. They don't seem to care so far and I'm not sure I can be bothered. What would you do?

I'd go elsewhere.Toyota really do not care a stuff about their customers once they've sold the car, unless it is to extract more money. The weasel warranty was a good example. It was little more than an excuse to sell a heavily overpriced Battery warranty.

Just seen this on the toyota GB website...

:g:

If only If they meant it! I wouldn't need to whinge on about the Weasel Warranty.

When they talk of the experience of owning a Toyota being uniquely rewarding, I think they must mean rewarding to Toyota - it certainly hasn't been to me,

Toyota has had the reward of a year's extended warranty, and were hoping to be rewarded by payments for the ludicrous hybrid Battery warranty.

Every time I receive anything from Toyota, it has the 5 year warranty logo on it. They really do know how to rub salt into the wound.

I would get a qualified audio specialist to check the signal strength. It may be a rubbish antenna. He may be able to help with an amplifier or a better antenna.
