Resale values certainly NOT increasing, especially on your old Prius Gen 2’s ??

Strange comment - perhaps I am missing your point - resale value of my Gen 2 has not dropped since last August if Glass' guide is to be believed.

Toyota spares a bit dodgy now ?? - Resale values certainly NOT increasing, especially on your old Prius Gen 2's ??

One of our correspondents even advocated to avoiding an accident because of this.

Thats a strange comment? There are not many products that go UP in value after you have owned it for a while, perhaps a gold ring might with todays gold prices

The fact is residual values on Prius are superb,

Toyota spares dodgy? Well there are issues with supplying parts to build new cars, there are good stocks of parts around the world to supply the after market at the moment. Toyota have moved production of some parts to factories in China and the normal planned shut downs of factories for holidays etc have been shelved

Do you think the Japan crisis is limited to car production? Not at all, you will find a whole load of products made in Japan in short supply later in the year. Japan produces most of the electronics for computers, electronics, TV's, even tiny electrical componants that fit inside engine ECU's etc. ALL the big Japanese companies and some of the European manufacturers who rely on products from Japan will be affected as the year moves on, so it wont just be car manufacturers who will suffer

Sorry David I meant "holding" not increasing. :blushing:

Not sure how a dealers quote for your second hand Gen2 would compare to Glass's though ??

Try telling that to Honda - Nissan and Toyota factory workers, you know, the ones on short time working at the present.

They would be delighted to access some of your outsourced parts then they could all go back to work.

Terry, you are confusing two seperate issues

I was responding to your

Toyota spares a bit dodgy now
quote. Toyota AFTERMARKET spares, you know, the ones you would need if you bumped you car? Well it is not those parts that are in short supply, (not yet anyway) those parts do not enter the new car production line. Where there is a shortage, it is in parts to build NEW cars, and yes I am well aware of the manufacturers involved

ALL Japanese manufacturers, not just car producers, will be struggling for some time to come, perhaps you should read the Toyota NEWS FEATURE which gives a timeline for production of Toyota cars

Shortages of new cars can only be good for the used car market, the old supply and demand rules apply, maybe your Prius' WILL go up in value after all?

Kingo

Dealers have certainly quoted from Glass's guide for my wife's Auris, and have been spot on what I had read independently.

My Prius would cost me at least the same to buy now as it did last August even with more age and miles...in fact might cost me more!

The Gen 3s also seem to be holding their value very well.

The shortage of new 3rd generation Priuses for at least the rest of this year will surely keep the residuals of used examples firm.

I guess I must have got it all wrong with my pessimistic predictions and unqualified rationalisations. :!Removed!:

Thanks to the positive attitude of the likes of 'Parts King' - 'dwilson' - etal so my Auris's value is not slipping but could be firming up, :D

I will not be left high and dry 'awaiting spares' if I should need some Toyota part. :D

Still bad news for the factory workers though.

I promise not to be so negative in future, thanks for cheering me up chaps.

Nissan don't recommend appearently using fast charging on a regular basis (it was a Nissan promotional person trying to sell me (lol) that

told me that.

Personally i think what may need to be looked at eventually is the idea of desiging cars so that whipping the Battery out with some kind of hoist and other tools in 15 minutes is possibe - put in a new one and off you go. Perhaps you could have it set up like petrol stations - you would at least then have the ability to travel on long trips.

Not going to happen with the Leaf - but i think that if the manufacturers of EVs can't get the range up then this would need to be looked at.

I think Renault are seriously looking at this for their forthcoming Fluence EV due next year. I think it's based on the Leaf but will use a drop out Battery that can be changed in 1 minute! You also don't buy the HV Battery but lease it.

Obviously the Renault/Nissan partnership is trying both methods to see which proves more popular. I guess there are pro's and con's to both methods. I am not too sure about swapping batteries as after a few years you might end up with some worn out or knackered one and suddenly find you have a 28 mile range instead of 88 miles. Also, if you lugging a big heavy Battery in and out twice a week it could start to wear the terminals (and they'd have to be massive to carry 80 kw of load). But I guess this is why Nissan/Renault are trying both routes.
