Loud Engine Noise

I recently got in my Auris and pressed the Start button, after a minute or so the engine started up as it sometimes does when needed but what followed was a very loud noise from the engine compartment, it scared me to death it sounded like the engine was a goner, it lasted maybe 4 or 5 seconds and then the engine sounded normal, I put it in reverse and it was quite ok but did wonder what it could have been and if anyone else had an experience like this before?

Have you checked your engine bay for, feathers, fur, skin or other bits of anything that might have had a face at some point? :D

there were comlplaints on the prius forum of owners engines making strange noises, that then stopped and everything seemed ok.

Some Prius guys have reported this occasionally - I've not had it myself - yet! but it appears to be nothing to worry about??

The car had been parked outside overnight and I did wonder if some cat had met an untimely death but no blood and guts were on the ground when I reversed out  , this happened while I was in the UK and have done 800km since so hopefully all is well.
