Would High Oil Consumption On 1.8 Vvti Really Be A Problem

After a brief nightmare experience with a SAAB I have returned to Toyota, as my love affair with my Y plate 1.8 Avensis GLS which I had previous to the SAAB was tragically cut short when someone ran into the side of it and wrote it off.

I have just bought an 03 Avensis T3-S 1.8 Vvti and am aware there have been issues with excessive oil consumption calling for short engine rebuilds on some cars.

My question is this -if the Avensis I've just bought turns out to have high oil consumption, does that really matter?

Previous to my Y reg Avensis I had a Carina E which used 1L of oil per 1,000 miles from the day I bought it on 42k to the day I traded it in 8 years later on 127k. Other than having to put oil in regularly, not a problem. Is the Avensis issue likely to be any different?

I've only had the car a few days and am very pleased with it, but the oil consumption is still a big unknown, so any comments would be appreciated
