My Avensis 2.0 vvti recently started giving a puff of black smoke when starting the car. After that, no more smoke! :-p

If anybody has any idea to why this happens please help.

Thanks guys!

could be your valve stem seals allowing a drop of oil down to the piston top

is your oil level dropping

is the smoke definatly black or blue

Black smoke is a sign of over-fueling. Have you checked the air filter?

It could also be due to a faulty engine coolant temp sensor.:)

Black smoke usually means that they have failed to elect a Pope ;):yahoo:

But... in this case, you certainly don't want to see white smoke. :!Removed!:

Yeah I did that mate, pulled all the leads out one by one to see if all the cylinders were firing then pulled out the lugs and the were all fine with a nice grey/white burn color on the points. I do however do mostly motorway miles, but for the last 2 weeks just been driving in town (short distances) Got back on the motorway yesterday so Ill go have a look at the color of it now and if it gives the black puff on startup. Can you think of anything else that might be wrong? Thanx for your help anyways!

ok i'd cleaned both MAF sensor and throttle valve. they might to give a wrong signal to ECU.

cheers

It might be as simple as a slightly rich fuel mixture to get the car started in the same way that a choke would richen the mixture. If it only happens on starting how much of a problem is it really? did you check your air filter as James suggested?

Could also be a faulty O2 sensor causing an incorrect fuel mixture.
