i have a very annoying knocking sound coming from the rear of my avensis, i have tried several things to stop this including

1, parcel shelf

2, rear seats

3, boot lid

4, seat belt brackets

5, luggage strap holders

6, sat nav box

7, spare wheel

8, jack

9, petrol cap

10, exhaust

11, out of ideas

the noise is like something knocking when you go over a bump in the road, it is really p*****g me of now as it is quite loud and i just cant tell where it is coming from even when i sit in the boot with her indoors driving,

any ideas no matter how daft they may seem would be helpful

cheers

12. Used up... geeeez, I don't know the English name... rubber stabilizer connectors/pads in the rear suspension (?) - very very typical ;)

13. The plastic rear plate holder.

14. 3rd stop light cover (the small piece of plastic you have to take off to change the bulb for example) - usually not very well fitted.

15 What do you mean by the exhaust? I've read that the end muffler's fitting (?) can make such noises (there was something about a rubber element... are there any rubber elements there)?

16. Did you check the car with & without the rear shelf?

I had a similar annoying clunk on mine - the local dealer told me it was a common problem with the rear damper bushes. Had those replaced and (touching wood!) no problems since.

The rubber things are called bushes.

It is a very common thing on all makes of cars, but normally not after a few years... ?

One other thing to check: I don't know the shockabsorber setup in the previous Avensis, but if the top end is slightly loose then it can clunk.

i think ive cured my knocking rattling sound........ :D

it seems the rubber stoppers on the boot lid were worn so the boot lid was not getting a tight fit causing the two hard plastic/rubber cusion things to knock against each other, i cured it by sticking some flooring pads on them, fingers crossed it seems to have worked, thanks for all your ides
