Cruise Control

Hi all, i got my switch today from an eBay seller in Thailand for £20 inc postage, it took 8 days to get here which i think is an excellent price and very good service.

I fitted it this afternoon using a 20mm step cutter and a small rotory tool to widen and elongate the hole, a little trial and error and the switch

went through pefectly without the hole getting too big, i am going to fit a thin rubber disc to the base of the stalk and tuck it inside the cowl to hide the base of the switch.

Haven't tried it yet but i am confident it will work ok.

Sorry for starting a new topic on CC, this was supposed to be attached to the CC thread, perhaps an administrator could move it there to keep thing tidy :help:

Nice work, how did you get the correct position to drill?

By looking at other members photos i guessed where the centre of the stalk would be, fairly accurate guess!

Hey UK Republic,

What a great job, especially with the hole cutter.

I have just bought the CC from Thailand and am waiting to fit it.

However, I thought the steering wheel cover came off to enable the hole to be drilled. It appears, from your photos, that you drilled the cover in situ. Is that true? If yes, one will have to be careful not to damage whatever is behind!!

Today I visited a local Toy dealer and he said they would have to sell me the complete steering wheel with the cover, if I wanted to buy the cover with the hole drilled. And no doubt I would have to buy the steering wheel with cover and fitted CC.

Great work and great pics too. Thanks a bundle from all of us. It will give ditherers the confidence to go ahead with this mod.

Cheers

Hi Krait, I have just had a test drive and it works perfectly, yes the cover is easier to work on when it's still attached, you dont want to remove the wheel because if you are not aware of it you could snap an expensive ribbon switch and get into problems with the airbag, if you use a step cutter you will not damage anything behind the cover because they are only 40mm long. the pic shows the tools i used, the cutter and rotory tool can be bought for about £20, cordless drill is easier to use than a mains drill.

Regards Chris.

UK Republic, did you find out if fitting the cruise control will effect the warranty

Hi, i never enquired about the warranty because i decided as it's a genuine part things should be covered, but i might remove it when car goes for a service as suggested by ptaurissr.

Thanks a bundle, UK Republic.

I don't have a flex drive like yours, but I do have a small Bosch cordless which will do admirably, and I've always wanted to buy a stepped cutter. I usually use the circular saw type of hole cutter. But that will not be good as it needs a drill down the middle of it.

Thanks again,

Krait

I have just finished the job today. I marked out a rectangle, drilled a hole in each corner and used a knife to cut along the perimeter. Took a lot of fiddling as i had marked the hole too low.

Anyway, fitted the CC and then found a great way to cover the crap.

I bought a pad of black iron-on material (which is quite thick), cut it to just 5mm oversize of the hole all round, made a hole in the centre for the shaft and some slits all round for movement of the shaft, and then fixed it to the outside of the cover with a soldering iron.

Looks great and the CC works a treat too.

Thanks fo ryour advice and help with the photos.

Sorry, omitted to add:

Total cost of materials £19.65 + 1.45 + £21.10

that is terrific value for money.

Krait.

Krait, what engine you got?

All I know is that it is a 2007 1.6 VVTi.

I have not yet got used to all the engine designations. Perhaps someone can tell me what it is. And please do not say it's in the User Manual, as I have not found it in there yet.

Incidentally, I called the Toyota Extended Warranty and asked about Warranty issues if I bought a genuine Toyota CC and installed it myself. I was advised that, although the part may be genuine, if it is not installed by Toyota, the Warranty will be void.

I was incredulous, as i told them that the installation did not incur any wiring (other than connecting a plug), drilling soldering or modification other than drilling a hole in the steering wheel cover.

So be aware guys. I am not taking any chances and will remove the CC before warranty work.

All I needed to know :) I'm looking to see if anyone with the 2.0 D4D has installed this. And I can't find my engine code in the user manual either ;)

If your engine is 2.0 D4D, then it's code is 1AD-FTV.

You can install a cruise stalk as described in this topic, 100% sure...
