Rav 4.2 D4D Hesitation On Hard Accelorating

Hi

It’s been a long time since I posted a new topic the last one to do with a DMF problem, this was fixed thanks to all the help from this forum  , and I have had no problems until recently :o .

My Rav 4.2 D4D has developed a problem when accelerating above 3000 rpm, it seems to go very flat and just not pull. This is particularly experienced when accelerating up hill. Also when accelerating hard on a flat or down hill I can hear a fluttering noise around 3500 to 4000 rpm

I have checked the operation of the EGR valve without removing it and it seems to operate smoothly, I have also checked all the pipe work and all this seems to be OK.

When I asked Toyota about this they said it could be the SCV valves and suggested I use a fuel additive to see if this cures the problem. This I have done over the last 500 miles or so but no change and possibly getting worse.

I also tow a caravan I have noticed this problem when overtaking on the motorway and again it all seems to start at just over 3,000 rpm.

The car has covered 81,000 miles and is fully main dealer serviced, they say they have checked everything and had the car on the computer with no problems reported.

Any help again much appreciated

Sounds like an SCV problem or fuel starvation, when was the fuel filter last changed?

http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=87986

Kingo

Thanks for that Parts King.

I will check the ohms on the SCV valves first before replacing if necessary. Do you know the cost for these items?

With regards to the fuel filter, Is this something that would be changed in the normal service through the main dealer. I have no record of it being changed and certainly have not changed it myself. Again do you know the cost for the replacement filter and how difficult is it to replace?

I'd also consider using a K&N air filter to. I've found it to be far better than a standard OE one.

hello mate

start to investigate it from fuel filter -- if this one is still alive then your secind possible enemy is air in the fuel system; the third enemy is overfueling created by bad injection. As to SCV -- these suction control valves are mounted on the fuel pump housing and also may create sinusoidal performance due to about to burn out. Cheers/Igor

just as above starting with check/replace the fuel filter. If the filter is clogged, empty it out on a bit of cardboard and let things dry out to see what sort of clug is there. (Just in case theres gunge got into the pipes or tank somehow.)

Hi all,

New SCV valves, new fuel filter and new air filter fitted by Toyota today and they checked on the computer with no reported faults. Collected the car and tested it and still have exactly the same problem. Now power above 3,000 rpm and fluttering sound when accelorating hard.

Looking at part exchanging it for a 2006 (06) D4D T180 are these problems still evident on this model or have Toyota improved them?

You will have more trouble with the new model mate, Seems they are getting worse in reliability,

New pistons, engine rebuild

New headgasket, overheating problems.

Oil consumption problems

Just to name a few

Have a read at some of the threads on here.

You be better of buying a travant!!!

Just out of interest, did you have to pay for the repairs to your rav? or was it under warranty.

Good to see that Toyota tested the work after fitting all those new parts, Well done Toyota.

What did they say when you said it has exactly the same fault?

Do you get problems with the air mass meter on these engines only it sounds like the problem I had on my old Audi A4 tdi, It was revving cleanly till about 3,000rpm and then it was like hitting a really big flat spot. unplugged the air mass meter and it cleared so I stuck a new one on, Not sure if you can unplug the Toyota one like you can with the Audis (which would just run without it on a generic map off the ecu when you did)

Not sure mate about the MAFS, but if I was plasticman007 I would get Toyota to give me all my money back if he paid for the repair, and put all his old parts back in.

WTF?????

I agree, I would not be too chuffed if I had spent money on it and the fault was still there.

Hello matey

what about workability of your turbocharger? ARe vanes are flexible and resppond to your gas pedal?

Check with boosting air pressure sensor on the body. You still didi not report developments with injectors that might create over fueling. Cheers/Igor

Hello everyone.

Just to let you know I managed to get Toyota to change these parts free of charge. My farther has just purchased a new car from them and I am in the process of possibly part exchanging the Rav for a 4.3 2006 (06) D4D T180.

I would like to know members thoughts on this later version of the Rav D4D or would I be better going for the D Cat version or even a petrol version

Toyota have said everything is fine with my current car so this should not effect the part exchange value, I know however that its not fine and me being too honest would like to get the problem fixed before selling private or part exchanging

Any advice appreciated

Cheers

Read these threads before you decide on a newer model,

You may be better sticking with what you got for now.

Take you car back and say the problem is still there and demand they fix it. I presume you have warranty then?

Or one hell of a gift of the gab. :argue:

Hi

Just driven the rav again and just woundering, could the fluttering sound be comeing from the EGR valve and could this be causing me the flat spot. Can this be cleaned on the 4.2 and do you need a new gasket to replace when fitting back on. The sound seems to be comeing from the EGR valave area.

I think I will stick with this Rav based on all the bad reports from the 4.3 version. What opinion do the members have on the petrol version of the 4.3?

Cheers

I have a 40k 4.3 07 RAV4 T180. I think it's the best model out there. Better than the later XR which replaced it. I am quite annoyed that they didn't continue this car. The only things I have changed on mine are the BRS rims in the wheels, they had to go. Just the thought of them in there made me cringe and then you can fit some decent tires. A Lindop chip also makes a good drive even better and a K&N air filter is a 2 minute replacement.

So as you have been asking.................. Just do it.....

There is a write up some where on this forum on how to clean the EGR on a 4.2 rav.

If you're trading it don't worry about the faults and don't believe the hype that all 2006 models are defective because they are not. However, there have been some issues and some are serious enough to warrant an engine rebuild but just keep it well maintained and keep in touch with us and somebody will guide you. If there is something that needs attention Toyota invariably do the right thing as you've seen with your 4.2.
