Avensis Fuel Pump Query

I've a 04 Avensis D4D. It had a problem with fueling, sometimes would stall at lights, slowing down etc. Eventually they discovered the fuel pump was full of crud, so they cleaned it out and resolved the problem. It did cut out once or twice in the following month, and It's been suggested it might be best to source a replacement pump.

Is there just one fuel pump, or two on these cars. I'll probably check with the garage to see, I think it's the plasticy one in the tank, but I keep seeing a completely different (and far more expensive one) floating around on eBay, along with the plasticy one.

There is a supply pump in the tank, which delivers the fuel to the fuel filter.

That's the low pressure fuel line.

From there, the fuel goes to the high pressure pump that feeds the injectors.

The high pressure pump is far more expensive than the supply pump.

If the supply pump is filled with dirt again, that means that you bought contaminated fuel over time. :crybaby:

If the problem continues you'd better have the tank cleaned out first instead of buying supply pumps.

hi

firstly you should fine the REASON but not to change costly parts. The main and rough mistake of all drivers is to just change parts (cure an effect)-- investigate the nature of booster pump clogging. As other said -- the tank has to be cleaned. Do not safe money to use residue fuel - it is like to feed your baby. The baad feeding the empty pocket for cure engine fault/Cheers/Igor

I'll get the tank / fuel pump looked at again, to see if it still shows signs of dirty fuel. I've only had the car from 90k miles, and have doubled that since using hopefully clean diesel from main suppliers.
