1998 Rav 4 Gx 5 Door - Fuel Smell

hello, long time not posting but everything has been going well until now.

I have a 1998 RAV4 GX 5 door. I am getting an intermittent 'fuel smell' in the cabin. Its not like raw fuel, but more like the smell you get when you open up an empty fuel can - you know --- what i mean.?????

I tend not to fill the tank up these days ( £££££££££££ ) but put £20 a time in.

Any ideas????

I havent noticed any leaks / drips etc on the floor....and it doesnt smell like raw fuel...

thanks in advance

Simon C

Check the fuel tank breather pipe - its behind the plastic shroud in the rear nearside wheel arch. Almost undoubtedly that has rotted / rusted and needs replaced.

well....took the liner off ( under the rear nearside wheel arch ) breather /return pipe almost through....the main fuel filler pipe doesnt look too healthy either. There was a small split in the breather so sealed it with silicone until I can get a new one........ So a trip to the dealers monday to get a new filler / neck / pipes / clips etc........

No doubt will cost an arm and a leg..........unless someone on here can help ( BD postcode )

cheers

Simon.

I replaced the breather pipe with a length of fuel/petrol standard rubber hose and some jubilee clips which did the job.

I did replace the larger petrol filler pipe with a bit of large petrol standard reinforced plastic hose but to be honest it hasn't been as much of a success as I get a very slight leak at the lower connection despite having the clip tight. Parts king on here sells the replacement filler pipe if you send him a PM. He did give me a price recently for it but I'm trying to make up my mind on whether to replace the tank on my number 1 RAV with alloy tanks used for racing. I'm going to wait until I get the rollcage fitted then decide.
