Hello, my 07 Avensis estate 2.0ltr D4D 6 speed sometimes baulks when going from 1st to 2nd & very occasionally (mainly on overrun)jumps out of 2nd. Car has 73k mls, dealer serviced. I'm second owner. I'm thinking worn synchro, but could it be clutch? grateful for any common experience or advice from those with product knowledge. Thanks

Sounds like the gear is failing to fully or properly engage hence popping out on the overrun when the driving load is removed, releasing the pressure on the gears. Could be 2 faults here: 1 wear in the box or adjustment required to selector mechanism (the symptom). 2 poorly adjusted or worn clutch leading to increased pressures in box when changing gear (the cause) leading to additional load and wear on the box (ie the symptom).

On the other hand I am no expert on this particular box so could be completely wrong!

Good luck.

I think that Druid boy could be right. But when was the gearbox oil last checked/changed? I know with my T-180 I had terrible problems with getting into 1st gear when cold. And only on one occasion(That I can remember) that mine poped out of 2nd gear. I changed the box oil to Silkolen Pro SRG 75w (Full Ester race box oil) and never had a problem since to this day. I think that your box (Being a 6 speed like mine) has to have a straight 75w grade which helps with the tripple syncro.

The symptoms are consistent with a worn synchro hub or worn bearings.

You could try changing the oil but when draing check for metal particles

Poor oil has a tendency to affect all synchro hubs.:)

Thanks all, Looks like I'll be changing the oil even if just to eliminate this as a cause - don't know for certain if it has been done during dealer services - suspect not given mileage.

I wouldn't have thought it had been done. Good place to start I recon

I had a similar issue a few years back on a Peugeot 307.

It turned out to be a nut in the gearbox had come undone and allowed play in the gear. Under load it held fine, but as soon as i let off the throttle it jumped out of gear.

It may not be the same problem, but it sounds similar.

I very much doubt that the oil is at fault here. By all means change it if it makes you feek better but I fail to see how changing oil that is designed to stay in the box for life will remedy what appears to be a mechanical fault. Even if the oil is full of fragments of gearbox components that are preventing gear engagement why is it only affecting 2nd gear and how has changing the oil repaired the fault? This may be as simple as worn or poorly adjusted gear selector mechanism or it may be a complex as worn components within the box.

Have you consulted a professional? A few quid sepnt up front can save 10 times their value later.

Forte produce a product for gearboxs that you could have a look at. But it could mean that even after changing the box oil (And maybe using Forte) that the problems still there which would mean replacing worn out parts. But I'd still change the oil 1st and then if all else fails go to a specialist and have them take a look.

the old 5 speed box for the avensis used to suffer the same issues, if the oil was low or dirty.

used to pop out of 5th gear...and only 5th gear!
