My Mums Tyres

Hello everyone (again)

Me mother has a 07 yaris ' zinc ',with 37'000 on the clock 1.3,3 door.

Her rear nearside tyre has ' cracks' between the lines of tread all the way around the circumferance of it.

She still has 2-3 mm of tread depth between the warning lumps and the surface.

She is concerned it may blow out ,at speed on main roads.

I put it down to deteireation of the rubber in sunlight, and sometimes a lack of use

Tread is ok,but told 8 weeks use left in it ?!

The offside rear is fine, same wear depth..strange,both tyres have been on the car since new

Common problem in Essex so I have heard.

try moving to the lake district where the tyres will be submerged more freqently.

It seems certain types of rubber are more prone to this than others, but (Assuming I understand what you mean!) it's just down to it degrading due to sunlight.

If it's only on the road-surface, then you're probably okay (Although if you're down to 2-3mm I'd start researching new tyres anyway! A few months back I got 4 Continental EcoContact 3's and can recommend them :)).

If you start getting cracks creeping onto the sidewall tho' then better start thinking about replacing them asap!

Out of curiosity, are the cracks just surface/superficial or do they look like they're quite deep?

Hi Rambler,

could it be possible that your mum always parks the car in the same place facing in the same direction when she is not using it? Might be that only one or two tyres are subject to direct sunlight and that is what is causing the problem. Probably only applicable if it is parked outside or in a garage with a window that allows direct sun over a restricted area. Just a thought!

Hi Chris

Yep...spot on,car is always parked in roughy same place on drive,so rear tyres are subjected to sun almost all day (especially the rear nearside).....its what i thought it would be.

Strange though,my Rav's tyres dont suffer the same parked just behind mums...but they all terrains, much deeper tread & possibly a thicker rubber.

I use my rav4 daily, sometimes she wont use yaris for a few days ( being in reteirement ) & with a free bus pass
