Many Warning Lights!

All, relative newbie here but have been reading posts with much interest and learnt alot!! We have a 98 R plate 3 dr Rav which has performed with total reliability for years and years, so we recently invested in a 2006 T180 which is very nice too.

However just had a text off my better half saying that she was driving the car and she experienced a lack of power, difficult gearchange and then the warning triangle, engine check, VSC check and 4x4 check all came on... She stopped the car, cycled the ignition and set off but the lights came back on pretty much straight away :(

Unfortunately I am working away at the minute so cant see for myself, luckily we bought from a LR dealer so they provided a 6 month warranty so I am hoping whatever the issue is that they will cover under warranty.

However just wondered if anyone had any ideas as to what could be the problem?? Your help is much appreciated and thanks in advance. BTW the car has full service history and 78k on the clock.

Could be a number of things but get them to check the EGR in first instance. Are you aware of the Toyota extended warranty regarding blocked EGR, excessive oil consumption, head gasket failure etc?

see attached PDF

Thanks Davrav, yes I had read some posts on the EGR / extended warranty etc. Just hope it doesnt come to a full rebuild as I fear it will taint my feelings towards the car somewhat :(

Why would this affect the gearchange / 4x4 and VSC systems though??

Jedi, u are worrying me!!

A blocked EGR appears to throw up a generic warning. Obviously the system will have stored a specific code and that can be read but, in many cases, cleaning the EGR has removed the symptom - if not the underlying problem, as we have recently found out to many owners concern

Well if its a clogged EGR this will be because of high oil consumption most likely, and acorrding to the TSB engine rebuild.

I was thinking more on the lines you may have a 4wd electrical problem rather than the other.

The garage dispatched the friendly AA man who instead of getting the car to the garage just read the DTC and cleared the fault code which was flagging that it was the EGR. He told the missus that was ok to drive but light will probably come on again soon - no s**t shirlock! Therefore I cant wait to get back and investigate but in the meantime have ordered a can of BG244 as reading other topics it seems to help. Thanks again for the advice all, will let you know the final outcome!!

any engine fault with a warning light brings on the vsc check 4x4 etc.....ps your can of bg244 wont do nothing if your egr is bad enough to bring on lights mate...

not only because of an oil consumption + over fueling during the cycle due to poor injection or similar symptoms like engine filter clogging; late injection timing; turbo fault; air in the fuel system etc. In case the carbon deposits are very solid then the more likely it is because of an oil burning but in case it is friable then is it because of over fueling and you have to have al injectors calibrated. • 2 weeks later...

Hi all, just to update on this I ran the car into Toyota today and they diagnosed that the car requires the engine fix (new pistons, rings etc) so it is now being worked on. Even though I am slightly disappointed i have nothing but praise for the way the dealer / Toyota have dealt with this, sorted me a courtesy car etc and no questions over whether it would be covered or not. So we will be without our T180 for a week so back to the trusty 4.1GX
