Follow Up On Retro Cruise Control

Hi.

I know that this has been covered in detail on previous posts, but I fitted a cruise control stalk iaw sol d4d, but it doesn't work! According to all the posts, it should work, and I do see the "cruise" logo hidden on the dash just above the seatbelt warning, but it doesn't light up, and the cruise doesn't work.

Dissapointed! That was a lot of hard work for nothing!

I will be digging a bit further tomorrow, and trying to find pin 24 on the ecu to con check it, but where on earth is pin 24? There are an awful lot of plugs going into the ecu!

The thought I have at the moment is that the pin/contact inserted into 8 & 9 on the squib connector may be too large and not actually making contact. The stalk was purchased from kbank477. I have tested the stalk and the resistance test appears to show what I would expect, varying resistance with each selection. The black wire is in position 9 and the red/silver into 8 (I even tried to reverse them, just in case!)

If I come to a solution, I will post it, unless anyone already knows the answer?

I may have the possible opportunity to fit a 2006 avensis leather wheel, with built in cruise. Connector looks the same, but will my air bag fit into the steering wheel?

For your info, my Avensis is a sept 2004, d4d, base model, engine code 1cd-ftv, 5 speed manual.

Any info/ideas gratefully received.

Don't know how to fix your problem, but it worked for me. Cruise works great although it is a tad abrupt when you turn it off, my car is a 2005 2.0d4d T3X.

Hope you sort it.

Hi. Not having much luck. Checked the size of the pins, and they are ok.

As far as I can tell, there is no white wire going to pin 24 on the ecu E11 connector, but E11 is very difficult to get to because it is covered with a plate that is attached with those security torx screws!

It looks very much as if cruise is not enabled on this particular model.

Going to go and buy security torx bits and have a proper look!

What base model is it?

Is it T2?

Hi.

It's a T3-S D4D.

Now I have a major problem!!! Car won't start! Turns over but doesn't start.

No fault codes.

Maybe immobiliser, as I have been disconnecting/reconnecting the ecu, but with Battery disconnected.

Don't know!!!

Sounds like immobilizer... reset the ECU one more time..if it doesnt work, search for article which programe your key with lock and immobilizer and give that a try.

Mine is T4, and I bought the whole steering wheel which came with cruise control stalk and it worked like a charm.

If light is not coming on, then it could be that the stalk is not fitted in correct pins.

But at the moment you need to bring your car back to its life....work on that first and best of luck.

Hi. I had a chat with the local Toyota garage and he has assured me that it is not the immobiliser, because the car locks/unlocks as it should, and the alarm works. He reckons that it is just a coincidence that the car won't start now, nothing that I have done. Tried his suggestion of pulling the efi fuse, which would reset the ecu. No joy. So it's going to have to be towed to the toyota dealer next week. That's messed up my weekend!!

Did it happen after you put the cables of cruise stalk opposite to what they were supposed to ?

Hi. Sorry for the delay in replying. I have been having a good look at the two plugs that I disconnected from the ecu, just in case! I had shoved a piece of wire into the slots on what I found out later to be pins 20 and 24 on E10. I have tried to release the connector, so I could pull the pins out to have a look at them to make sure that I hadn't bent/enlarged them, but I can't get it open!

No. The car was working fine yesterday with the stalk plugged in. I even tried it with the connectors reversed to where I thought they should be (ie pins 9 & 8 instead of 8 & 9) and the car was working fine. I even tried 10 & 11, and the car was working fine. I now have them disconnected.

I only have a cheap OBD2 interface, using scanmaster, and no codes are showing, but the toyota garage said that those interfaces don't show any codes, and only allow you to reset the eml!

Nowhere open now until monday, so the car is u/s till then. Had plans for tomorrow :crybaby:

Without a proper code reader I haven't got a clue where to look. It could be anything. I would have liked to eliminate the possible damaged pins though. May have a go again in a minute to get that connector opened.

Thanks

Terry

PS

Ran the scanner on it again and now have a permanent p0045. Any ideas? Searching tinternet shows p0045 as Boost control solenoid circuit malfunction (from a D4D land cruiser).

Hi.

I have managed to fix the car. I eventually managed to get the female pins out and found that they had opened up. Squeezed them up a bit, refitted them and everything works now! Code and eml reset.

Shame that I can't fit cruise on my car though. It is not loomed for it!

Thanks for all your help and concern.

Hi Pete.

Thanks. Kicking myself for making such a stupid mistake in the 1st place, and messing up my plans for the weekend, but well pleased with fixing it myself. Saved me a fortune!!

Cheers

Good news on fixing it yourself. At risk of sounding like a vulutre here but, what you got planned for the stalk? Might just work on my car....

Hi. Appreciate the compliment on fixing the car! Boy, was that a headache!!

About the stalk? To be honest, it didn't really fit that well. Lot's of thought, and cutting and drilling, and even then I wasn't 100% happy with the result. I did a good job, and it would have been quite acceptable for me, but I wouldn't really want to sell it on, knowing what I know now. It was pretty cheap anyway, so if you want to get one and try yourself I recommend kbank477 on eBay. Only cost me £19.65, and delivered in a week!

My advice! Keep a look out on eBay, or scrap yards, for a steering wheel with built in cruise. I have actually just bought one on eBay, full leather and aluminium trim, much better than the standard plastic steering wheel. I know that the cruise control won't work, but it will look good  .

I paid 45 for whole steering wheel with cruise control stalk. All I did was change the steering wheel and plug in the cruise stalk. Piece of cake.

Hi. Nice one. Well done. I paid £36 for mine.

Does yours work then? If so, what year/model avensis do you have?

I am still at a loss to know why my car does not support cruise control. It has the cruise light in the dash, but connector E10 doesn't have the white wire on pin 24!

When I have the time and inclination, I will put a female pin and wire into pin 24 on E10 and wire it up to the squib. I am pretty sure that the ecu will have the electronics in it for cruise. The only problem is whether all the other inputs/outputs are also present. I have a feeling though that it will not work in my car. According to the previous posts about retrofitting cruise, it should work on my car, (quote, it works on all 1cd-ftv), but they are obviously wrong.

When I get my steering wheel and fit it, I will be really amazed if the cruise works!!

Hi guys.

Just an update on retrofitting the cruise control on my 2.0 D4D 2004 Avensis estate.

I have finally managed to get it working!

The replacement steering wheel (off a 2006 Avensis with factory fitted stalk) didn't work. I have now run a single wire from pin 24 on E10, to pin 8 on the back of the squib, and then pin 9 on the squib to earth. It's a bit of a lash up, as I couldn't get any female pins to fit into E10, so the wire is just stuffed in the hole! I will redo it properly sometime, when I figure out what sort of pin should be fitted!

So there you have it. If you don't have the white wire already fitted into pin 24 on E10, it is possible to wire it up and all should work. It's a bit of a strange one why that one wire is not already fitted. All the other inputs/outputs (stop switch, clutch switch, multifunction display unit), for the cruise control to work are actually there!

The steering wheel is great, full leather with brushed aluminium inlays, but unfortunately the display button doesn't work! I opened it up and had a quick look inside, but couldn't see anything obvious. It's a pcb, so it has probably gone! I wonder how much Mr T will want for one of those?

Cheers

Way to go Terry! So, are you off out 'cruising' now? No. Didn't think so. :D I have a stalk on the way for my 06 2.2 D4D but reading the original thread I'm unsure if it will work. Even though the thread says cars up to Jan 06 will accept it the 2AD engines don't feature on the success list.

Fingers crossed eh.

Thanks. It's been quite a headache sorting it out, but I am well pleased with being able to achieve it!

I hope yours is as easy as other people who have just fitted it, plugged it in and away you go. I believe that the 06 is "on the cusp", so to speak, but my "new" steering wheel is off an 06 model (don't know the exact model though!), so I hope yours will be fine.

  • 1 year later...

Hi Terry,

I've got the same problem with cruise control, all this hard work and the cruise doesn't light up. I'm catching up after 2 years :) don't know if you'll still be around, but if you are, can you guide me more about where to find the ECU and do I have to wire it all the way up to the socket inside steering wheel ?

Regards,

Mansoor

Terry - are you still around? I'm interested in hearing how you wired up pin 24 and how the wiring was routed.

PS sorry to revive an old thread.

Hi Michael,

Which step are you on, maybe I can help you with the install? I installed cruise control on my 1.9 D4D early this year and has been working great since.
