Eratic Rev Counter

Hi there,

Thoughts would be appreciated.

Having just returned from my local garage on Friday having had an MOT and service re oil change, oil filter, air filter and a seal to an exhaust blow, l noticed that when driving back into the drive and stopping the car, putting into neutral, its a manual car, the rev counter proceeded to go from 1000 revs to 2000 revs on its own. I must add it was perfectly alright before it went into the garage.

Any thoughts as to the problem?

Could the mechanics have touched something whilst doing the service to cause this issue?

I have also noticed that the green eco light on the dash board also does not appear to come on whilst drive at a steady normal speed. Any thoughts?

I did take the car back to the garage staight away, again when driving and taking the car into neural, its a manual car, the revs did the same thing. When l arrived at the garage, of course the car was not doing it, but the car was running at much high revs than it would at idle. The garage owner agreed but could not come up with a solution.

Except to say, pop it back on Monday and we will do a diognostic check on the engine.

That's great, but l really don't what to have to pay for something that may have occurred because of the service, or it could just be one of those coincidences.

Having driven the car for a couple of days the revs seem to have returned to normal at idle and the revs are not going up and down in neutral, but the eco light is still not coming on.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much for reading.

Kind regards

It's possible an engine temperature or fuel sensor hmay been disturbed but without being able to look inside the engine bay it's hard to tell.:)

Hi Pancake1.

Don't have the diagnostic done. The car has it's own (FREE) system built in. I use it myself! Search my earlier post on self diagnostics for more details.

What should be done is all the connections to the engine sensors, plus the vacuum pipes checked.

The areas worked on during the service and any nearby pipes may have been disturbed or not reconnected properly.

You say the car is returning to normal, so the garage may have disconnected the Battery. If they had done this then the ECU will go to a basic setting. Then as you drive the car, the ECU will 'learn' and the car stores new settings.

The ECO light bulb is easy (depends on who is doing it) to change. It could have blown and is cheap buy.

I was out in Brighton for the Mini run so only just seen your post this morning. I hope you see my reply in time, as this will save you money.

Let us know how you get on.

Thanks to all for your prompt replies.

I took the car to the garage on monday morning. They have cleaned the trottle and sprayed it. Not a big job! Had it running for 40mins to see if any other problems and its fine.

Was not charged and did not expect to be.

Thansk to all again
