New Rav4.3 T180 Just Purchased

Hi

Further to the problem with my existing Rav4.2 I have gone ahead and part exchanged it for a Rav4.3 T180

I pick the car up on Wednesday after it is being Motd and serviced.

Can any members give me any pointers to look out for. I have read all the issues with the DMF problems and the engine rebuild issues but would appreciate any members comments or suggestions for items I should keep an eye on. I still have a couple of years left on the extended mileage warrant given by Toyota so I want to be certain I am checking frequently for any tell tail signs of anything starting to cause any issues

The new Rav is a 56 plate and has covered 31,500 miles with full Toyota service history.

Also could any member advise me on the following

Should the tyres be changed as a pair per axle or is it OK to just change one. The dealer has just put a new RF tyre on the front passenger side (done by Toyota) but not on the drivers side which is approx. 1/4 worn is this OK?

Again many thanks to everyone in advance.

Cheers plasticman007

I don't think changing just the one tyre is an issue like on some 4WDs as the car is not permanent 4WD There is a thread about cleaning out the EGR valve but that's been thrown into the air since a Mechanic Member has highlighted the engine problems that You already know about.. I'm not happy to live with the threat of engine problems if I'm honest . But at least You know or knew before You purchased I did not !!

Post up a pic or two ????? Oh and welcome to the Forum I'm new here My self ....

Charlie.

I would change both sides of the axel at the same time and put the same make and model of tyre on.

If the tyre is 25% worn on one side, it will be running on 6mm of tread. The new tyre is running on 8mm maximum of new tread. Absolutely nothing wrong with that in my book, but as usual I stand to be contracepted.

Good luck with yer new car,

Big Kev

Some 4WD cars have to have both Tyres changed.. On RS Audis ( Ive had a few) ALL four tyres Must be changed !!! The Rav 4 does not need any of the above.. Change em both if You like but its just wasting tyres......

Hi + Welcome You seem to be aware of most of the T180s problems, runflats etc, however you mention DMF problems, there has not been any DMF problems on any of the 4.3 (2007 onwards) Ravs, Good luck with your new motor ..Stew

PS for those of us that have spare wheels, we would think nothing of putting a completely unused spare on the same axle as a well worn tyre, so it shouldnt be a problem IMO..

No Mate The RS 4s and 6s are permanent 4WD where as the cars that use Haldex are much like our cars and use 4WD only when the system calls for it. This is why Our cars go back to 2WD at a certain speed even if You select manually the 4WD by using the button on the dashboard.

I understand what You mean by keeping the tyres the same but in the case of Runflats its just to expensive to throw away a tyre with lets say only 50% wear....

Wee Charlie.

Welcome

Firstly don't be put off by Charlie's downer on Toyota, nothing has gone wrong with his T180 - he is expecting it to and he just doesn't like Toyota :D (Charlie - please take this in the good spirit that it is meant :P )

There are some horror stories & known issues but as many people have said before, there are lots of problems with lots of cars and I have recently seen a '10' plate Roller on the side of the motorway with an RAC van in attendance!

My 3 recommendations would be buy an extended warranty from Toyota if you do not already have one, you can get them interest free & monthly payments so you are covered if things go !Removed! up. Secondly get it chipped - Google 'Lindops Toyota', they do a great power upgrade which I have recently had done (there are others on here too). The upgrade makes the car so much better to drive (not that it is bad in the 1st place), is supposed to increase MPG and gives a serious power increase. Finally - get a spare wheel, the runflat system is a pain in the ar5e and I have experienced a puncture within the 1st month of buying our T180, there are plenty of options and there are 2 genuine T180 wheels & tyres on fleabay at the moment - just do a search under RAV4 T180.

Cheers

Martin

Hi all

Thanks for all the information

Very useful and informative.

I loved my 4.2 D4D and also my petrol mk1 both served me very well but had a problem with the DMF on the 4.2 full replacement needed just after i purchased it.

hopefully I will love my T180 even better.

Am I right in saying Toyota have extended the warranty on the engine to 7 years or 112000 miles?

Would you advise obtaining an extended warranty straight away or when the 7 years are about to expire if the above is true.

Again many thanks for the great forum and the members contribution either good or bad

Cheers

I believe 7 years is the maximum age Toyota will warranty up to and, yes, there is now an extended warranty on the engine as you describe. It mitigates against excessive oil consumption and associated effects.

You are correct on the extended warranty for the head gasket problems being 112k. But Toyota's own warranty (Which is very good) has to be purchased befor you hit 100k. I know this as I tried to buy there warranty but my car had gone over by a few thousand miles and they wouldn't budge.

Here you go Charlie:

Toyota Warranty

The extended warranty that can be purchased is explained half way down the page. These can be bought so long as the car is between 3 and seven years old and less than 100K [so I'm guessing that, if an extended warranty of two years is purchased just before the car is the max seven years and just under the 100K, it would be covered up to nine years  ]

Edit: Just re-read the pricing and they will only let you buy a one year extension on a seven year old car

As far as I understand it, the Toyota extended engine warranty that we have recently learnt about is 7 years or 112K from new and dependent on it exhibiting the recognised symptoms.

Charlie mate, give Toyota a call and do a bit of haggling with them, that's what I did and then they offered me an additional 10% discount if I paid by direct debit

I got 2 years (unlimited mileage per year) for £720 which works out at £36 per month.

If you are going to be doing less than 20K per year which I know from what you have said previously you may not, the warranty is even cheaper.
