Yaris 1.4 D-4D Crd Alternator Noise (09/2003)

Hi All,

I had my oil + filter & belt replaced about three months ago. When I last looked at the belt before change it was quite loose and sort of waiving while engine running. After I got it changed it's very rigid and there is maybe 1cm loose in the middle. The noise started about 1 weeks after it got replaced. Could it be overtightened belt and is the alternator's bearing broken now? A screw cap was missing from the top of tension clamp but fortunately it's just a whole and didn't affect its position.

Cheers,

David

Mine does that when it is cold too. It is the sound of the belt slipping slightly on the coolant pump pulley. If you take a look at it while the engine is off and tap the coolant pump pulley with a screwdriver you will hear a sound similar to what you hear in the video. If the tension is ok then i would be reluctant to tighten it more. That will just wear out the belt AND the alternator/cooland pump bearings sooner. I got some belt spray from my job and it helped a lot but it may or may not be available to the general public.

Thanks. I'll have to check that out although to me and my mates it sounds like it's the alternator pulley making that noise. Can the pulley itself be replaced or whole water pump / alternator? Do you know by any chance the correct tension on the belt and best way to check it? Thx, David

Is it a sort of shrieking noise like some bearing is being rubbed the wrong way?

I get that in the winter when the engine is cold but it goes away quite quickly as the engine warms up. I was told it was most likely the ancillaries belt needed slight tightening as it may be slipping slightly.

If it only happens briefly when it's first turned on tho', it's probably not worth it as over-tightening is worse...

I don't know off hand. I looked it up and found this:http://www.toyota-tech.eu/legacy/Toy/aimuploads/%7B028CD19C-FE63-4B26-B970-6B9C90DB82B6%7D/Airco%2088300-52390%20AAAMC-26%20RHD%20EC.pdf

10kgf to deflect the belt apparently.
