Rear Seat Belts In New Avensis Tourer

Hey all...

just a quick question...

On previous Toyota cars I've had, the rear seatbelts would lock in place if you were to pull the belt out to its full length. The only way to unlock it as such would be to let the belt retract all the way back in...

Is this supposed to be the same on the newer Avensis range?

Regards

Rob

The answer is yes but check your handbook. Look for Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) under the "Seat Belt" section in your Handbook Index.

By the sounds of it yours is not working? Check this 1. Fully extend the rear seat belt 2.allow it to retract 12", no more. 3. Can you then extend the belt or is it locked (as it should do)?

I've just had problems with mine on an 09 Auris which seemed not to be working ie. wouldn't lock properly. It does seem that the belts is allowing itself to unlock when you retract it with still a good 24" to go before it is fully retracted. On my previous Corolla it unlocked with a lot less belt still to retract.

Please let me know if this helps as mine is currently booked in to have the rear belts replaced under warrenty. :)

Yep the belts wont lock... pulled them all the way out and back in a little and then back out again...called MR T and they want to look at it...as im off to arran in a few days I cant make it till I get back, but seems like a poss issue with the belts also... are they all supposed to lock? ie the middle one too?

Don't know what belts you have in the centre, so can't answer that.

What worried me slightly when I spoke to the Workshop Foreman at Mr T (who are usually very very good) he wasn't aware of the ALR locking facility on the rear seat belts & seemed a bit perplexed by it all. Even so he was happy to agree the warranty job. I am monitoring the issue on the Auris & think that I have solved the problem ie. earlier unlocking on retraction when compared to older models Corolla 06 & Yaris 51. I think I was allowing it to retract too far hence it wouldn't lock. We'll see!!

I also have an avensis 2010 tourer and the back seats don't do the ARL. My mother in law is very happy with. I'm not due to the child seat that is looser. However I checked that on other Avensis 2009-2011 and all did the same - no ARL.

:huh::blink: To be honest I still didn't read the manual about it but the fact of no other tourer did that made me think it was just like this...

With no ARL mechanism how do you safely install child seats in the rear of the car???? I'd check my handbook & ask your dealer the question!

The same way all people did with lot's of other cars that don't have that feature: we relly on the belt feature of holding us in case of accident as the front ones do... I honestly found very strange that a security feature as important as that one was left aside on a car like this...

Next Monday it will be the first phone call the dealer will receive in case I don't find anything on the manual.

Also, today I test it on the new Auris and also it would not work. I saw nothing refering to it on the Avensis manual... I have to talk with the Toyota Tech Dept. in Portugal.
