Rear Hatch Tinting

I noticed my Dog has been getting exposed to a lot of sun through the large glass window in the rear hatch in my new Prius so I had it professionally tinted today with a finish that cuts out 85% of the sunlight. Not only will it keep her more comfortable but it looks surprisingly stylish too with the whole hatch window blackened out.

I wouldn't mid if I was driving around in a 11 plate car either mate. Where did you get that done? I want some for my Avensis T-180

Did you not get the rear sides done as it looks like just the rear in the photo. Sweet ride either way.

Here's mine (just to highjack your thread). I had mine done by Monaghans in Darlington for anyone interested. They did a top job.

No, I only did the rear hatch window purely for the dogs benefit. Hardly anybody ever travels in the back of my car so I wasn't bothered about getting the side windows tinted. They do look nice with tinted windows though.

My Tint was done by a company recommended by my Toyota dealer, they are called Screentech and are based in Bristol.

Cheers for the photos, the car looks good.

Might get mine done, not only for the kids in the rear but useful for me as I carry all my test equipment in the car all of the time & can't always cover it with the pulley out blind load cover, also it looks good.

That's the other advantage with it. Other than in full streaming sunlight, its next to impossible to see into the boot so great for keeping prying eyes from seeing your test gear.

does it inpair you view through the tint.why i ask is i was talking to a chap who had brought a new focus with rear passenger windows tinted .he had went to the dealers to get a new fiesta, but the dealer asked him to look at a focus with all the extras on it,with very little differece in price between the two.he said he was very pleased with the car except for the tinted widows which effects his vision when reversing, especially when doing this in a carparks.

No, looking out from the inside is very different to looking in from the outside. Sort of think dark sunglasses - you can see out but not in. Yes, the tints will make the view at night a bit darker but not dangerous but you've also got your clear glass door mirrors during reversing.

@cbcdesign, very nice. The deep tint on the rear window goes well with the black spoiler and contrasts nicely with the bodywork.

@Habu - very nice looking car. Can I ask are your tints on the front side windows as well? Have you checked that they are legal?

I ask because I bought an ex-GB Golf GTI with tinted windows about 5 years ago. Much to my surprise and horror, after driving it for almost a year, it failed MOT in Northern Ireland because the tints on the front windows were too dark! Apparently the regulations in England are the same, however MOT testers in England don't test for this and leave it to roving DVA examination patrols to catch offenders. Thus the car passed MOT in England... but failed in Northern Ireland!

(A happy ending, the glass was replaced for free and the test was then passed.)

To a certain degree it does, particularly at dusk and at night but its not a problem when the car is equipped with a reversing camera.

@r04drunner1. Thanks. I think so too.

No, tints only applied from B pillar backwards although in the photo it does look like the fronts are too. They are 20% tints as I thought 5% (pimp limo) was a bit too black. I believe (might be wrong) that 75% tints are permissible on the front sides but this level of tint is not much darker than the standard glass so I didn't bother.

rear view mirrors for normal use are great, but for reversing say as an example out of a parking bay in a carpark, you have vehicles coming from left and right, and those behind reversing/driving out their bays.and also if it a supermarket then you have people coming from between vehicles and although they can see your moving still wander in your path.if they obscured by your C piller that the mirrors dont always cover this, you could fail to notice them.yes you can reverse into a parking bay.but i give this as an example where looking over your shoulder is safer.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just bitten the bullet and booked my HSD in for tints with Screentech next week - they seem a cracking bunch and very helpful - watched them working on an A6 and was very impressed with their attention to detail and the end result... Thanks for the heads up. D.

Cool! I was certainly very pleased with the results but then they are the preferred supplier to Toyota Howards which speaks volumes really.

Indeed, and they do work for Toyota at Portbury Dock. BTW, you got a mention when I booked - you may want to contact them for your commission! :D
