Leaky Fuel Tank

My Lodger has a '98 (T Plate) Avensis 1.8 GS estate with a leaky seal on his fuel tank. He cant put more than 10 litres in the tank otherwise it will leak whats above the 10L mark. I have a suspision its a seal on the tank. Anyone know of a way to repair this or is it a new tank job.

I have looked around the local scrappies (Vehicle recyclers ) and its very difficult to get an intact tank. The sods drill them and cash them in.

many years ago there was,and even maybe now, there was a firm that made motoring aids a bit like the holt range,amongst the things they offered was their petrol patch.

most fuel tanks then were metal not as most now are plastic.

as long as the spot where the tank leaked did not have flakey rust (a quick rub with a wire brush, no need to drain the tank,even if the area was soaked with petrol you just stuck the patch over the hole.and hi presto the leaked stopped,permanently.i am trying to remember their name.these days you dont hear about water pump squeek but they did a cure for that which was a soluble oil.liked watching customer reaction when you put the liquid in the rad and the noise stopped like magic.

Just something to be mindful of...

I would be very carful if you use a wire brush (On a metal Petrol fuel tank) on it as you dont want to get a spark (Doubtful, maybe) or you'll be Yorkshire toast!

But I'm sure that my mate Acetip wouldn't have mentioned this if he'd done it in the past.

should have mentioned a brass wire brush.slip of the finger.if remember correctly this was mentioned on the container.the product was called petrol patch but stll cant remember the firm.just realised that it was about 48 years ago i last used this product.where has the time gone.

result,result.just done a google search for petrol patch,and up it came, the firms Granville,and they are stil going strong.whether its the same original product i dont know,may well be improved.

Thanks guys. Ordered the petro patch and its on its way. Its cheap stuff as well.
