04 Yaris D4D Computer

Hi, just bought a Yaris d4d t3 and noticed that the computer will only display average speed, don't know why I need that. In the owners manual it says only petrol cars display mpg/mileage left etc. I'm assuming its the unit that is different. Has anyone swapped the computer unit (where radio station etc) is displayed with another unit with mpg facility. And if so has it worked? Thanks in advance.....

There have been a few threads on this, but the general consensus is that you can't :(

It's a bit stupid since you'd think a diesel owner would be more interested in the mpg than a petrol owner!

The Mk2 Yaris has the mpg computer in all models tho'.

You can approximate it by getting something like a Scanguage or one of the phone/PDA/laptop apps as they can guesstimate average and live mpg based on fuel flow and speed, but it's probably not worth it.

TBH the jury is still out on how accurate the computers are anyway - Most people find there is a discrepancy when they calculate it themselves, based on how much fuel they put in and the trip/odo reading.

I've even looked into getting an MPGuino which needs a bit of diy to build and install. The deal breaker for me was the complete lack of information about the diesel injectors like flowrates etc. So i gave up. I have a scangauge and after a bit of dialling in it is no too bad, accuracy wise. But if i change my driving style it is all out of whack. I'll just have to endure till i replace with the newer diesel yaris.....

I guess I'm old fashioned relying on pen , paper and calculator and being 99% accurate.. It's easy to know when you use more fuel: right food/cold/short journeys mean around 55mpg. Long journeys/gentle right foot and warm means 65mpg..My average at 57.5mpg has hardly changed over the past 5 years.
